How do I put a non-breaking space in an author's name?

$

Hi all,

A few people have commented on the difficulty of getting multi-word last names to sort correctly on Kobo. One person said that he had had success using non-breaking spaces, and I believe @davidfor has suggested that solution on several occasions. My problem is that I can't figure out how to do that.

If I enter a non-breaking space directly into the Author field, calibre treats it as a regular space. If I use U+000A0 or \xA0, Calibre (and Kobo) treat those as string literals rather than interpreting them as the non-breaking space character.

If I use  , Kobo does not process the space or anything after it. So, "St. John of the Cross," which should sort as "St. John_of_the_Cross," becomes "St. John of the Cross" in Calibre, which Kobo displays as "St."

I would appreciate any advice.

Aura H2O2 Overdrive issue with 4.21.15015

I'm starting a new thread because it seems this post got lost in the other discussions about the new firmware, 4.21.15015

I don't know if this is a bug or a "feature", but when I select Overdrive in the new firmware, I cannot browse the entire catalog, only the displayed selections "Harry Potter", "what's new for kids" "Thrill Ride" etc. Also, within those categories is a "Filter" button with a dropdown mun offering "Featured" and "All books", but I am unable to activate the "more books" option. By that I mean that I can select "all books", and a message comes up saying "Please wait... we're currently loading this list", but when the page refreshes, the filter is still set to "Featured". What has happened to the ability to search the catalogue of the library the device is logged into?

Forma Is there any way, even in principle, of controlling the screen LEDs individually?

I have unfortunately managed to get myself worked up about the Forma's uneven screen lighting. I don't care about the button-side light bar, but there is a darker spot on one side of the screen that really drives me nuts. It occurs to me that one solution might be to boost the LEDs that illuminate that spot (or dim the others) on an individual basis. If this is possible, it seems that one of three things might be accomplished, any of which would be an improvement over the current situation:
  1. Even out the page lighting. (best)
  2. Move the dark and light spots around periodically so it doesn't feel as though part of the screen has a permanent bruise. (second best)
  3. Create a more mottled look, so at least the screen is consistently inconsistent. (still good)

Is there reason to believe that this might be possible? If there is, and nobody else has time to deal with it, I will look into doing it myself. I would appreciate any advice you might have.

Hello,
Does a total noob's guide (covering setting up a toolchain, what libraries are available, how to write kobo-compatible makefiles and things etc) for kobo development on a linux host exist?
I'm familiar with software development and familiar with C++ although getting a language like go or rust running would be nice.

Sorry for the newbie question, I'm struggling to find resources for getting started.

Libra Replacement Device Has Dead Pixel?

$

So, I finally received a replacement Libra after four weeks from sending in my original one (bezel was pulling away from the screen).

Now, after receiving my replacement yesterday, I'm faced with what appears to have a dead pixel problem (single pin-prick sized light shining through the screen). I noticed it when reading at night last night. It doesn't show when the light is off either.

Is there anyway to fix this without going through the replacement process again? I tried a factory reset with no luck.

I've reached out to Kobo through their Twitter Help page. :help:

Kindle owners should have a Kobo

I've been reading about some wanting night mode and the book cover to the the lock screen image.

What I want to know is why do Kindle owners want features they can already have with Kobo and can easily get by getting a Kobo yet they stick with a Kindle? Seems silly to me to have a Kindle that doesn't do what they want when they can get a Kobo that does do what they want.

Kobo Forma Calibre Plug-Ins

I am moving from an Oasis 2 to a Forma and will be using Calibre to load Amazon purchased books on the Forma.
I viewed the Plug-In Index and was completely overwhelmed by the amount of content.
What are the Kobo Forma specific Plug-Ins that you recommend I add to Calibre?
I assume some of these Plug-Ins may have overlapping functions. If true which ones are preferred?
Thanks, Joe

Libra Books not following series order

Hi! Kobo Libra H2O here.

I'm trying to add these seven books which are part of a series. I have them set up as part of a series in Calibre, from 1.00 to 6.50 (last book is a collection of short stories, book 7 is coming).

I transfer them as KEPUB, no problem. I have done this for several other series. On the second sync the series information appears and the order numbers are correct.

But when I enter My Collections view and order them by series... the order comes out wrong. 4, 6, 6.5, 1, 2, 3, 5.

To be clear, on top I set "Sort: Series" and "Filter: All". All books are displaying on Kobo the correct "SeriesTitle - #" information. But the reader is not displaying them in the correct order.

This is the only series I'm having this problem with. I might be overlooking something obvious but I've done the same things for other seven book series, with no problem.

Aura H2O JavaScript problem: mirror my phone's screen in browser

I am trying to build an app to mirror my phone's screen in the ebook's browser.
The problem I am running in with my kobo and kindle that the browsers don't support websockets. I have also tryed to update the image via setInterval, but it's not working.
I am running out of ideas how I can do it. Is there a spec of Kobo/Kindle's browser Javascript Dom API somewhere?
Any ideas how to browser debugging? Other methods to show an updated picture on KOBO/Kindle?

Kobo touch won't allow register after reset

$

I lit upon this forum after fruitless searching of the Kobo help pages...

I have an elderly Kobo Touch (N905) which decided this afternoon to do a factory reset. When I eventually powered it up again, it prodded me to set it up by connecting it to my PC. I dutifully did so, having installed the Kobo desktop application on my wife's (Windows 10) PC (my PC runs Linux Mint); Windows recognised the internal storage of the Kobo and the SD card which I plugged into the Kobo not long after I bought it. The Kobo displayed a screen telling me that it was connected and charged, and prompting me to use my computer to visit www.kobosetup.com. I worked my way through the menus to find the instructions to register the ereader, and the critical step seems to be missing from the behaviour of my ereader: after I've chosen the language (English) I *don't* get the question "Don't have a WiFi network?" - it went straight to the screen "Please Setup Your eReader". I also noted that if I went to the Wireless connection option in the settings menu and chose "Edit Wireless Networks" it informed me that the eReader has no known networks (not a great surprise), *but it didn't admit to being able to detect any networks*, despite it being less than a metre away from the nearest wireless access point.

Can anyone suggest a way out of this hole, please? If the reader is really dead, I shan't bother to get a replacement - I have the Kobo application installed on my (Android) smartphone and tablet, so I have access to all the books in my library...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Ian

Have you ever stained an ereader screen? If so, how?—I would like to stain mine.

I know the thread title sounds ridiculous, but hear me out. The light gradient on my Kobo Forma is subtle but it's driving me crazy. I thought I would get used to it, and maybe I still will, but I don't think I can until I've satisfied myself that I've tried everything I can to mitigate it.

The gradient on mine follows the usual pattern. There is a light bar next to the buttons, which doesn't bother me. Next to that light bar is a large darkish patch. With the screen light on, it looks almost like a faint bruise. (See diagram.) My thinking is that there is no way to get rid of that "bruise." But if I can stain the rest of the screen, I can at least make the screen even, which is all I really care about. (See diagram 2)

I have accomplished something like a proof-of-concept already. Using some ballpoint pen ink and a cotton swab, I darkened the brightest areas of my kobo screen pretty effectively. The effect is a marked improvement over the status quo. Unfortunately, the effect is not permanent—it can be worn away using a cloth or even a fingertip. (The longest I've given it to "set" is a half hour—maybe it would become permanent if I gave it longer?)

One possibility that I am considering is darkening the screen and then putting a screen protector on to hold the ink in place. Any other suggestions?

Why are two lines of series info appearing?

What causes duplicate series info to display in My Books? One, sent via Calibre (Series - x - Title), but where is the one below it coming from? (Series - x) Screenshot below.

I would like to have title only displayed with the series/number below it as shown in this example: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/at...5&d=1584100236

How/what do I need to edit in order to achieve the same result as above? Would the metadata plugboard be the place to start?

Thank you in advance.

"repair your kobo account" - time and progress info?

$

How long should "repair your kobo account" take? I've seen a previous thread where someone said it takes about 2 hours for 400-500 books. I have 900 or so book and 15 hours in it hasn't finished. Should it display some sort of progress info? Because mine certainly doesn't. Eventually I guess I have no choice but to abort this.

I ran it because syncs haven't completed since the 5th of May and though I've occasionally managed to persuade it to download new purchases, it just wouldn't admit it even knew there was one yesterday.

And "repair your kobo account" seemed like the lowest impact thing to try. I guess next it's "sign out of your account" which is what the support people told me to do when I contacted them about a similar problem about 2 years ago.

I have a Kobo Aura one with 6.21.

Kobo H2O aura repair

Hi all,

I've bought a (broken) H2O aura from a second hand marketplace. I bought it from someone looking to repair it with a new screen from China, which he already bought. But he never finished the repair, so I got it for next to nothing.
The thing is however:
On arrival the four screws for the metal frame are missing. Has anyone any ideas what size those are, or how I can find replacements?

Thanks in advance!

tags all left justified?

$

All of a sudden, my <br/> tags are not following the text-align property for the <p> tag they are in. For example, if I have a paragraph that is right aligned, and I break it thus: "Sincerely yours<br/>Jane Doe<br/>Your greatest fan</p>, then "Sincerely yours" and "Jane Doe" are right aligned but "Your greatest fan" is left aligned. Same for centered paragraphs. This happens both with kepubs as well as epubs, and for epub2 and epub3. Is this new behavior? Are there any workarounds (that preferably don't involve modifying every single CSS file in my library)?

Edited to add: I am using a Kobo Forma on firmware 4.21.15015. Everything looks ok in Sigil and Calibre. It's just the Forma that is ignoring the text-align property of the <p> it belongs to.

Disable tracking?

I noticed there was a thread about disabling activity tracking, but it's closed and I don't know which patch I need to at least remove the activity from the menu (I hate that my Kobo is recording it and I can't disable it, but I can at least not see it.) :( Can anyone help with that? Sorry for any spelling/grammar mistake, English is not my first language.

Forma Is there a faster way to write a note in an ebook?

Is there a faster way to write a note in an ebook on a Kobo?

On a dead-tree book, I take a pen (or pencil, if I'm feeling timid) in my hand and can easily write in the margin.

On a desktop/laptop computer, i can type at 70 WPM using all ten fingers.

On a phone, I can do voice dictation, which can be quite fast and isn't too bad for accuracy.

But on my Kobo, I have to finger-peck on the on-screen keyboard. If I go too fast on the finger-pecking, the characters don't immediately appear in my annotation. This discourages me from annotating, or from making smaller notes than I wish.

Is there a faster way to annotate on a Kobo Forma?

Quick help for css for Kobo epub

Hi can anyone quickly help me with the below?

Here is the text:
<p class="p1"><img src="1.jpg" class="img2"/>*TEXT*<img src="2.jpg" class="img2"/></p>

Here are the styles:

.p1 {
display: block;
font-size: 1.5em;
line-height: 1.2;
page-break-after: avoid;
text-align: center;
text-indent: 0;
margin: 5px 0 0.83em;
}

.img2 {
height: auto;
width: auto;
max-width: 100%;
margin-top: 0;
margin-bottom: 0;
margin-left: auto;
margin-right: auto;
padding: 0;
vertical-align: middle;
}

In calibre in the preview, the thing displays on one line
IMG1*TEXT*IMG2

But on the kobo, it puts in line throws
IMG1
*TEXT*
IMG2

I would like to avoid the line throws and have it display as the Calibre preview - if possible -.
I don't want anyone to spend a lot of time on this!!! But any quick help appreciated!!!

Cheers, Steve
