Buying books from other country

With Amazon, living in USA there are several hoops that have to be jumped through in order to buy something not available in the USA but is available in other country store. Just switching country is not enough.

Is it the same deal with the Kobo stores?

Aura ONE A patch which forces a refresh every page for .cbz files?

$

My Aura ONE is starting to show noticeable ghosting on .cbz files if I don't have it set to refresh every page. This isn't a problem if I'm reading a book instead of a comic though, and I have to either manually swap the refresh rate back when I change books, or waste battery life by refreshing every page even for plain text.

Would it be possible to force a refresh rate of once per page only for .cbz files?

New Kobo Owner, first impressions coming from PW1

UPS **finally** delivered my Clara HD last night. After a few hours of reading here are my first impressions moving from a 7+ year old Kindle Paperwhite 1 that was ordered on announcement day.

I like that it's slightly smaller and lighter than my Kindle, with the same screen size. It fits in my pockets much better. That said, I found it slightly harder to hold than the Kindle, it just didn't feel as well balanced in my (proportional to my 1.92m/6'4" frame) hand. The smaller bezel did mean that I had to hold my hand in a slightly more cramped position. I suspect I'll get used to this.

The color changing lighting is VERY VERY nice. It's the only reason I upgraded, and I'm very happy with it. Mine has a slight bright spot near the bottom page numbers at night from one of the warm LEDs, but not too bad, so I think I'll keep it (my PW1 had some uneven shadowing at the bottom, which I got used to also). Putting it side-by-side with my Kindle in a dark room is shockingly different -- HUGE improvement.

I like swipe to adjust brightness (though it's a bit touchy), but REALLY MISS pinch to adjust font size. I didn't think I'd care, but it turns out that I really do. :( I need to look around the dev forums, hopefully somebody has solved this.

Speaking of pinch to adjust font size, I probably wouldn't care as much if it would keep a more consistent size when switching between books/articles. On the Kindle I seldom had to change it, but it feels like I have adjust the Kobo on every book/article. :chinscratch:

Page turns are a bit less responsive than the Kindle, I feel like I have to tap a bit longer to get them to register. I'll probably adapt.

I didn't think I'd care about higher resolution so much, and toying with the PW4 in the stores side by side w/ the PW1 had me convinced that I didn't care about the resolution, but I have to say that it was nicer than I realized and immediately obvious. Not sure why I didn't get that impression when playing with the PW4. I found myself reading with a smaller font than I did on the Kindle.

On my Kindle, I had the official leather cover. The original ones (PW1-3) were way nicer than the current gen cover (PW4), and is very nice. Unfortunately Kobo has far fewer cover choices, and the one I bought (Finite, slim sleep cover), while nice, isn't quite as soft and has sharper edges. Hopefully it'll break in a bit, if not I'll keep looking for something nicer.

Overdrive integration is nice, though the built in search is a bit clunky given that it can only search one library. Easier to find books on my phone and let them auto-sync down. I've yet to get a second library to work, even though I'm logged in to my Overdrive account. I might try setting it up again, but it's clunky, especially entering my 20+ character randomly generated password with lots of symbols, some of which took a bit to figure out... (hint, long press on a similar symbol to find the ones not on the keyboard)... e.g.
Code:

( --> { [
Pocket integration is really cool -- loving that.

News support was nicer on the Kindle. I liked how it presented the stories in a newspaper type of format w/ boxes. The navigation isn't quite as good on the Kobo, but good enough.

I've not yet put any custom fonts on it, not sure if I will.

I'm sure I'll discover more as time goes on, but so far I'm happy with it.

Custom fonts in 2020

Hi!

I just bought my first Kobo (Libra H2O) and so far mostly like what I got. Except that I can't figure out how to make custom sideloaded fonts work. There's a number of threads discussing this topic, but most of them seem to be 5+ years old and either don't apply to the new devices or I am skipping some essential step.

What I am trying to achieve is to define three font families, one for regular text, one for sans-serif text and one for monospaced text, and have Kobo display text in any of these font families. To do so I uploaded the necessary font files, renamed so that the filename matches the internal font name, to the device's [root]/fonts directory and created a stylesheet which would reference these fonts using the url(res:///fonts/FontName.ttf) syntax. I am using the stock reader with "Publisher's default" as the selected font.

But I still can't get a proper display. I keep modifying my HTML code in any way I can think of, but most of them simply ignore my fonts, or perhaps display one font family correctly but not the others. I even tried switching from res:/// to file:///mnt/onboard, but without any success. What I would very much appreciate is:

a) either for someone who managed to get the fonts working to take a look at my files and tell me what I am doing wrong. Attached is a sample book file along with the source code and the Gentium Plus font file (the other two are simply renamed Arial and Courier New files from Windows XP).

b) or getting a set of files which work. It doesn't matter which fonts are used, as long as they are external and available, it doesn't matter what the content of the book file is. As long as I have a working example, I trust that I can adapt it to my needs.

Later one, I expect more struggle as I will be trying to get small caps to work as well, but that's step #2. For now, I need to get functioning fonts.

Thanks for any help.

Aura ONE Cannot change font for public library books

$

Hello,

my public library finally enables us to borrow e-books (in .epub format), but I cannot change font type and font size, nor increase line space on those books. For my own books, I know how to make a copy and delete the .css file in Sigil if the font will not change, but with public library books I cannot do that due to DRM protection. The public library says this is the fault of Kobo, because it cannot override the built-in css file from public library books, as apparently (?) other e-readers used for library books can.

There was an old topic discussing Kobo epub fixer app, but those links are dead and I cannot find that app anywhere. Some say that Kobo firmware has fixed this issue, but this is not true - I have the latest software installed, I have just synced my Kobo Aura One and nothing happens. :help:

What can I do to increase font size, change font and increase line space in library books? I am far-sighted and the small font is killing my eyes, I cannot read library books at all without adjusting the font to my preference.

Cheers for any tips on how to solve this. :thanks:

My kobo won't sync no matter what

My kobo won't sync. When I try to sync over the wifi, it can spend 24 hours just on the updating section. When I try to sync over pc, it can spend 24 hours on starting sync. Nothing I do works. I'm really frustrated because I just bought some books and I'd like to read them. What do I do? I don't want to replace a kobo because of some minor glitch like this. Can anyone help me?

It's a kobo clara HD, if that helps.

Can't Complete Buying Book

When I try to buy a book from the Kobo site the website won't fully load the page that allows me to pay for it. It seems to only happen on my home PC. I contacted Kobo and they seem a little stumped, but say they can fix it they just need about an hour to do it and they were in the middle of heavy call volume when I had them on the phone. I was wondering if anyone on here had an easier fix. I was going to re-install the Kobo desktop but now I don't think that will do it.

1st gen N416 - want to send text to display via USB

I'm working on a virtual pinball machine and want to have a separate screen to display rules for each game.
I dug my old N416 Kobo out of the box of assorted electronics and realize it's still on v1.0 of the software (haven't been able to upgrade it).

What I want to do is push either a text or image file to the screen via USB. It looks like newer e-readers can install a VNC client that would do the job but not the ancient beast I've got here.

I've found a thread where someone appears to have hacked it but it goes a little over my head. https://gist.github.com/RandomInsano/6a2de40f71c8580b79621f4699d3595e

What I'd like to have is a command that I could send with a variable (the file to display) to update the screen on demand (no more often than once every 30 seconds at most).

The source machine I'm running is on Windows 10. Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated.

Kobo H2O battery drain?

$

Hi,

I decided to try to charge my battery when it's at around 20% and charge it until it's around 80%. I've read that it's best for a li-ion battery to do it this way, so it could theoretically last up to 1,500 cycles.

I've noticed something strange when doing this (I only did it twice so far). I charge it to about 80%, then get it off the USB plug, and let there on sleep. A couple of hours later, when going back to read, last time I saw battery back to 64% (16% lost with no reason) and today it was back to 54% (26% lost!).

I wonder what could explain such a situation and if I am doing anything bad.

Thanks!

Aura H2O Help with dictionary font size in latest patch

$

I recently upgraded to the latest firmware and need a little help with editing the patch. The extent of my knowledge/experience is "enabled: yes/no." I am attempting to change the font size in the dictionary patch (thank you, jackie_w) but am getting the following:

files: src/libnickel.so.1.0.0.yaml
reading entry contents
loading patch file 'src/libnickel.so.1.0.0.yaml' (detected format kobopatch)
| parsing patch file: unmarshaling to map[string]yaml.Node
--> could not parse patch file: yaml: line 1282: did not find expected '-' indicator

I'm not exactly sure what the "expected '-' indicator" is and where it should be placed. With the exception of my un-commenting, the line (1282) below is unedited:

# Un-comment and edit next line to change font-size
- ReplaceString: {Offset: 15, Find: "%1px", Replace: "32px", MustMatchLength: yes}

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Glo Building a dashboard

I wanted to dust off my old Kobo Glo and build a simple dashboard - displaying time - weather, wind, sunrise/sunset etc.

I know frontend/js the best - so I'm looking for a way to get build a fullscreen web window (perhaps using qt5 webview) and simply loading a page with widgets.

What is the easiest way to do this with all the nice tools there are today? I'm thinking kfmon etc.

Also - in what way can I conserve power as much as possible? Preferably I want to have the whole device off basically - and then power on every 15 minutes to do a page refresh (or js widget refresh) whatever is most energy efficient way.

Worth replacing Glo HD battery?

I'm curious if other people have replaced the battery in their Kobo Glo HD, and what their experience has been.

I've had this Glo HD for almost 5 years, so I've certainly gotten a good deal of use out of it, but I don't really want something bigger and the equivalent Clara HD doesn't seem different enough to warrant buying.

I saw that the battery I should get is a PR-285083, listed on this thread:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=309576

But I am curious what the experience of others has been who have actually replaced the battery; how difficult it is to replace the battery and whether these replacement batteries work well, etc.

Thanks,
Andy

(Help requested) Getting started with Qt on Kobo

$

Hello everyone!

I stumbled upon this corner of the internet the last few days and decided I want to dabble in developing a simple application for my Kobo, just for fun.

I am a software developer and regularly use C++ with Qt for desktop apps in my job, so seeing that Nickel is built on Qt was a nice surprise :)

To get started, I successfully extracted the toolchain from this docker image: https://github.com/geek1011/NickelTC and setup my Qt Creator Kit to use this toolchain.
I've also installed NickelMenu in order to launch my future app.

So far so good! I've got a binary compiled with the toolchain, let's run it!

I've created the following script based on the launch script from plato:
Code:

#! /bin/sh

WORKDIR=$(dirname "$0")
cd "$WORKDIR" || exit 1

# shellcheck disable=SC2046
export $(grep -sE '^(INTERFACE|WIFI_MODULE|DBUS_SESSION|NICKEL_HOME|LANG)=' /proc/"$(pidof nickel)"/environ)
sync
killall -TERM nickel hindenburg sickel fickel fmon > /dev/null 2>&1

echo $QT_PLUGIN_PATH >> info.log
echo "starting.." >> info.log
./kobo-test-app -qws >> info.log 2>> error.log
echo "stopping.." >> info.log

./nickel.sh &

And setup NickelMenu like this:
Code:

menu_item :main  :Start test app    :cmd_spawn      :/mnt/onboard/.adds/kobo-test-app/kobo-test-app.sh
At this point, I'm running into an issue I'm not sure how to fix: NickelMenu starts the script, but my app immediately quits and returns to Nickel. My error.log contains the following:
Code:

This application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt platform plugin "xcb".

Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
Aborted

Does anyone have any tips on how I could proceed? Is the xcb plugin necessary, is it available on the Kobo itself or should I ship it with the app? It seems like $QT_PLUGIN_PATH is not set by itself.

Any help would be highly appreciated :)

This patch thread is for firmware 4.21.15015 (dbef21c40c54f137381976ab41c5df598ebacd69):

Instructions for patching on Windows, Linux, or macOS with kobopatch:
  1. Download the Kobo firmware release
You can find the download links here here.
  2. Download and extract the patch zip
Download and unzip kobopatch_4.21.15015.zip from here.
  3. Copy the firmware file to the src folder
Copy the original firmware you just downloaded into the kobopatch src folder.
  4. Install the firmware if needed
Install the firmware on your kobo BEFORE proceeding with the next steps. You can do this by extracting the contents of the firmware zip into the .kobo folder and ejecting.
  5. Choose your patches from the files in the src folder
Enable patches in the files in the src folder (or use the overrides in kobopatch.yaml to keep your options separate).
  6. Run kobopatch
Double-click kobopatch.bat on Windows, or run ./kobopatch.sh on Linux or macOS. On macOS, you can drag it into the terminal and press enter (you may need to go to System Preferences - Security and Privacy - General to confirm that you actually want to run it).
  7. Install the patches by copying KoboRoot.tgz into the .kobo folder of your device
If the patching succeeded, a file named KoboRoot.tgz will be created in the out folder. Copy it to the .kobo folder of your device. Safely remove your device once you are finished. On Linux, you may have to press Ctrl+H to show the .kobo folder.

Forma Kobo Forma - Upgrading storage?

Hi,

earlier Kobo models included an SD card slot on their mainboard, where the SD card could be replaced when formatted correctly.

Does someone know if this is still working with the Kobo Forma? The model is only sold with 8 GB storage in my country, which is embarassing.
