Then i saw there is already a My Collections tab in the device itself..

While waiting for my Clara to arrive (UPS is so slow! I've gotten so used to 2 day delivery!) I decided to prepare to take advantage of the Dropbox feature that I'd read about.

I wrote a nice bash script, run as a chron job, that would use Calibre's ebook-convert and recipes to download news once per day, and then kepubify to convert them for the Kobo, then copy the resulting files to a folder in Dropbox, cleaning up files more than 7 days old. The script even had sections to only download some feeds once per week. (I know that Calibre has the ability to auto-sync news, auto clean-up, and auto-copy to device, but I wanted to use Dropbox, and I didn't want my library "cluttered with news, and I don't like the extra folders/files that Calibre creates [or at least, didn't like them on my Kindle] -- I like a bit more manual control).

The script was tested, working great, I've got news in kepub format, ready to read on my Kobo once it arrives... and then I noticed that the feature is only supported for the Forma! :smack:

Now I'm wondering whether I want to root the device to install KoboCloud, or just do without my fancy new script. Oh well. :-/

I've looked through the source for KoboCloud, and it looks safe enough, but I'm curious what the potential risks (beyond the obvious warranty concerns) are with rooting (e.g. security -- I assume the OS is now open). Is Kobo as hostile to rooting as Amazon? Will I lose root? I decided on my Paperwhite to stop playing those games years ago and just stuck with untampered firmwares and my PW1 finally settled on a non-rootable version, so I can't change my mind about that anyhow.

BTW, as a general statement, how hard is Kobo development vs Kindle development? It looks fairly straightforward after browsing the source for that and KOReader.

New Kobo User- Help with Overdrive

Hi,

I got a kobo clara HD and so far I am very happy with it. I haven't been able to figure out how to read my overdrive/libby books on the Kobo. Can anyone give me specific instructions on how to do this?

I already have an overdrive account set up, with books on hold, and a book borrowed but I do not see where I can access my shelf on the Kobo.

I logged into Overdrive on the Kobo but the only option I see is 17 pages of books to browse on Overdrive. I dont see my shelf or borrowed book.

If anyone could help me here I'd very much appreciate it.

How to group books in Calibre and how to send this info to the reader?

Yesterday tried to organize books in reader..

I added manually some tags(words) as Collection column of the ebook on computer

Bu when i send this book to the device, it didnt transfer this Collection info.

How can i do it and

What is the best way to organize books on kobo device by Calibre software?

Forma How can I pin one particular series onto my Home screen?

Is there some way I can pin a particular series ("20MostImportantBooks" series) to my Home screen, through some patch or hack or whatever?

I am easily distracted with more than a thousand books on my Forma. :embarasse :o
(Please don't tell me to just keep 20 books on my Forma. I do like to give myself breaks from the Top 20 and spend a bit of time with the "thousands". :)

Libra cannot read side loaded epub files

hi everyone,

as I mentioned in the title, i couldn't read epub files transferred from calibre.

kobo only opens the book cover and unexpectedly exit to home page after i turn to next page

kepub files are ok but i just wanna read epub ones.

what did i do wrong?

what is the best way to download newspapers ?

i used the calibre download news option but i think it copies the data from the webpage improper way so it also shows menu texts etc... and makes many pages in one day's newspaper feed..

is there any "how to" guide to make your own news feed for kobo in the calibre software?

Forma MemoryError

Brand new forma out of the box, I added books then got this error after books loaded and metadata was being updated (this is where the error came up. I then ejected the device, retarted it. The forma then started back up with the new introduction/customize screen as if starting it for the first time (wifi setup/log into account etc) I went through the process again as I did initially did. Then a adding books screen came up and when it was done no books where on the device only empty collections of the books that had been transferred originally.

I restored to factory defaults and did the whole process all of again and restarted calibre added books and it again same thing happened except this time when I restarted the forma and plugged it back in to sync it to calibre after 15 min of reading books on device it also came back with the same error. What I have tried is to change USB cables, USB port, did 1 book, did 50 books, over 2k books. I did a windows error checking on the forma (no errors)
My question is this a DUD and I should send it back or is there something else going on between calibre and the forma and maybe KoboUtilities?

Clara HD How to permanently disable the backlight? (alternate firmware? config file? hack?)

Context: I bought an e-reader precisely to not have backlight like with all screens we have at home (TV, computers, smartphones, iPad, etc.). This was a major argument for buying: if it's too dark, then like with a real paper book, you just turn the room's light on and that's it.

I know we can just turn the brightness to 0%, but is there a hack / another firmware that allows to turn it permanently off?

Or another version of Clara HD with no backlight at all?

Reason: I don't want my young children to always turn the backlight on (and they do even if i turn brightness to 0%): I precisely bought this device to avoid them staring at backlighted screens all the day. (If at the end it's the same result as giving them a backlighted iPad, it's useless to use an ereader!)

On my Clara HD, I'd like to turn off the possibility of enabling the backlight.

(I know setting Brightness 0% turns backlight off, but I'd like to turn off the possibility of setting it back on, like here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=277190)

Kobo right-aligns italicized

I have created an e-Pub that has no issues on other devices. On a Kobo though something very strange happens. In the attache image you can see that it has right aligned the italicized phrase at the end of the paragraph. It has also removed the period that is at the end of the sentence. This doesn’t happen with every italicized word/phrase but it does happen frequently thought the book. I put the XHTML and CSS below. Has anyone else had this experience with their ePubls and does anyone know why this happens?

Any insight is appreciated.

Clara HD Series sometimes amis multiple authors

Now its available, I use "Series" a lot. However, I did noticed something odd.

I have series which are written by 2 or sometimes more authors.
When I add those ebooks, Kobo (using Series List View) shows below the title, all (well, as much there will fit on a line) authors found for that series.
That is very nice. However, sometimes Kobo shows just 1 author for a series, while I know there are more.
Deleting those ebooks and re-adding them does not help.
The only fix which seems to work is a shutdown/restart of Kobo and then the expected authors (most of the times) reappear.
Has anyone seen this behavior also?

I bought my Clara on Black Friday, learned how to patch it and made an image to upgrade to a larger sd card. Everything has been working great!

I like my Clara so much, I just ordered another since they might be discontinued and I plan to upgrade the sd card in it.

So, I was wondering if I could just make a current image of my original Clara to put on the sd card to put in the new one instead of going through the whole upgrade process?

It may or may not save much effort, but I'm curious which is the better way to go?
