Purchased a new Kobo Libra H2O Reader what Calibre Plug-ins should I install

After allowing commenters her twist my arm and convince me I ordered a Libra H2O from the Kobo website (oddly, it appears to be out of stock now. I don't know what that means, but I am super happy that I got it a day before that happened.) While it is on its way to me, I thought I should prepare by getting some of my books converted to the KEPUB format, and got the right plug-ins installed in Calibre.

What are the must have plugins to use Calibre with Kobo effectively?
I searched around installed these 4

Kobo Utilities
Looks like this will allow me to update metadata in books, and work with collections inside of Calibre.

KoboTouchExtended
I guess this allows for epubs to be converted to kepub?

That's what I have so far. Any other suggestions? Should I convert my books now, or wait until I get the thing and convert as I copy over to the device?

Any advice is welcomed!

Thinking of grabbing one of the Clara HD devices while it's on sale, but one quick question. Is there any way to translate phrases like the Kindle? I know that it has X-->English dictionaries, but can you use Google Translate or similar on a selection?

Even if it involves using KOReader or something, I'm OK with that. It looks like KOReader might have a plugin for that, but I cannot find anything definitive yet.

NickelMenu: An integrated launcher for Kobo eReaders

NickelMenu
The easiest way to launch custom scripts, change hidden settings, and run actions on Kobo eReaders.
___



NickelMenu adds custom actions the main and/or reader menus. It works on firmware 4.6+, and persists between firmware upgrades.

Installation:
  1. Connect your Kobo eReader to your computer over USB.
  2. Download KoboRoot.tgz (release notes) into KOBOeReader/.kobo. You may need to show hidden files to see the folder.
  3. Safely eject your eReader and wait for it to reboot.
  4. Ensure there is a new menu item in the top-left main menu entitled NickelMenu
  5. Connect you Kobo eReader to your computer again and create a new file (of any type) named KOBOeReader/.adds/nm/config, and follow the instructions in KOBOeReader/.adds/nm/doc to configure NickelMenu.

Features:
  • A built-in failsafe will automatically remove NickelMenu if any fatal error occurs, and will never result in an unbootable Kobo. Non-fatal errors will appear as a menu item with more details.
  • Multi-version compatiblity (even for future versions).
  • Many built-in actions:
    • Debug messages (dbg_syslog, dbg_error, dbg_msg, dbg_toast).
    • Nickel settings (nickel_setting:{invert,lockscreen,screenshots,for ce_wifi}).
    • Nickel extras (nickel_extras:{web_browser,unblock_it,sketch_pad, solitaire,sudoku,word_scramble}).
    • Other Nickel stuff (nickel_misc:{force_usb_connection,rescan_books,re scan_books_full}).
    • Launch system commands and optionally display the output (cmd_spawn,cmd_output).
    • KFMon (kfmon, kfmon_id).
  • Action chaining.
  • Simple configuration format with support for multiple configuration files.
  • Comprehensive logging to syslog (view over telnet or SSH with logread, or enable developer options and see the syslog files in KOBOeReader/.kobo).
  • No system files are ever touched directly, and no patching is required.
Future features:
  • Automatically generate items for actions like kfmon.
  • Reload configuration files without a reboot.
  • More actions and settings.
  • Log viewer.
  • More menu locations.
  • Custom browser URL and injected stylesheet.

Troubleshooting/FAQ:
  • I don't see any menu items in the main menu
    Try re-installing NickelMenu. If it still doesn't appear, please reboot and post the contents of the syslog.
  • I rebooted, and NickelMenu suddenly disappeared
    You probably triggered the failsafe (if you rebooted within 20 seconds after first turning it on).
  • I want to uninstall NickelMenu
    Create a new file named KOBOeReader/.adds/nm/uninstall, then reboot your Kobo.
  • I want to update NickelMenu
    Follow the installation process again. Your configuration files will be preserved.
  • When I press one of the actions, I get an error message about dlsym
    Something has probably changed in your firmware version. Try updating NickelMenu, and if it still doesn't work, please post your current version and the action you are trying to use.
  • When I try to open a file in KOBOeReader/.adds/nm, I get asked what I want to open it with
    Open it with a text editor, for example, Notepad, Notepad++, or Visual Studio Code.
  • When I open a configuration file, everything is jumbled in one long line
    Open it with a different text editor which supports unix line breaks. If you are trying to view the documentation, it is also available online.
  • I need help writing a configuration file
    There is an example configuration file in the documentation. If you still need help, feel free to post in this thread.
  • I found a bug in NickelMenu
    Try re-installing NickelMenu. If that still doesn't work, please post your syslog, your configuration file, and a description of the issue in this thread or on GitHub.
  • I would like to request a new feature
    Please post it in this thread or open an issue on GitHub.
  • I receive an error message when trying to launch a KFMon action
    Make sure the launcher name you specified is correct. It should look like action.png or something similar. Also, make sure you have installed the latest version of KFMon and try re-installing NickelMenu.

    Read the instructions above again, and see the documentation.

Forma When I press Sync, how can I choose to decline "checking for updates"?

When I tap on the Sync button on the Kobo screen, is there a way I can choose what to sync? For example, sometimes I want to sync just Overdrive. Sometimes I want to sync just Pocket articles.

I want selective syncing because before, for example, books or articles are synced, I see "Checking for updates..." for a long time. Basically, I wish I could choose to decline checking for updates.

Libra Perpetual sync = battery drain

I have my Libra set to power off after an hour if I'm not using it in order to save battery drain. Recently I've been noticing that only after a day or so, I'll open up the ereader and find it almost completely drained of battery. I checked my settings and theyre still set to power off, except my ereader is not powering off automatically! I think I found the culprit -- the spinny sync wheel keeps going around and around "checking for updates" and it shows it hasn't synced successfully in nearly a week. I tried then to sync it with the desktop kobo tool but it's stuck on "syncing ereader".

Does anyone know why this might be? I did do a big connect with Calibre to upload some books and new metadata a few days ago, and I don't know if there's something that might have messed with the sync settings (I use the Kobo Extended Driver and Kobo Utilities)? Or could there be another reason that it won't sync from the wifi but keeps trying to?

Clara HD Page numbers in wrong spots

Hi,

I've got a little problem with page numbers showing on reading screen on my Clara. Apart from the normal positions they're showing up on the side of a reading page (see file attached or link). Does anyone know the reason?

Kobo Touch - broken screen or something else?

Hello everyone,

I bought a second hand Kobo Touch for 10 euros. The seller said the screen was frozen, so I thought I could maybe fix that. I got it unfrozen fairly quickly (by plugging it in and out a PC a couple of times), but the screen remains messed up.

As seen in the picture, the bottom half of the screen is messed up, but since it follows a straight line, instead of the typical(as far as I can tell) random directional cracks, I figured it might be something else than a cracked screen.

So, am I wrong? Is it actually cracked? Even though I've bought a new Kobo Clara as well, it would be pretty neat if this one could be fixed.

Is there an email app for the Kobo?

Is there any way to email out from Kobo?

There's a decent sale on the Kobo Clara HD here in Canada and I'm looking to pick one up, but I'd like to be able to email highlights (whether using built-in reader, or koreader, etc.) to me@onenote.com.

I'm fairly tech-savvy (work in IT) so I'm happy to implement something technically challenging, as long as the process for actually emailing is relatively easy/simple. I assume it won't be as simple as highlight and Share like it is on Android devices, but something easier than plugging the kobo into the computer every time I want to backup/export highlights.

Aura E2 battery drains when e-reader is in sleep mode

HI,

I have searched the forum but I did not find any thread on the topic for this specific model.

I have a Kobo AURA E2 and since 3/4 months I have a problem with his battery. Everything started with a firmware update. Before the update the battery was usually lasting around 4 weeks. After the update I get it discharged in 5-6 days.

I keep wi-fi off and the light always on at 1%.
I have waited for a new upgrade (I was sure it was a bug) but it did not solve the problem and I have also tried with a factory reset.

Any suggestion?

Libra Replacement Device

If this is the wrong place to post this, I apologize. I'm new to this forum and I hate that this is my first post.

I was given the Kobo Libra as a Valentine's gift in February and noticed after a couple of months that the screen was separating from the bezel on the side where the page turn buttons are located.

I contacted Kobo about a replacement since this was covered by warranty, started that process, and sent my device back as instructed. Now, I'm sitting in an unbearable limbo waiting for my replacement to be sent.

The customer service was slightly less than stellar, and I wasn't given any kind of ETA. I found out today that I could be without a device for a month (this is really disheartening because I'm at college).

For those of you who have recently dealt with Kobo for replacements, about how quickly did you get your device back?

Thanks in advance for any help

I have a Kobo Aura 2 and set it up with a few of my own books. That was a while ago now and now I cannot seem to get the Aura 2 recognized by either my Mac or Windows computer????

On my Mac, I have checked Privacy settings and folders etc is set to be allowed
I have the Kobo app and follow the basic routine, start the app, plug in the device (tried 3 difference cables) click the "connect" on the Aura 2 screen and then nothing. I look in finder and its not there!!??

I have tried shutting down the computer and the reader

Likewise I do basically the same on my windows computer and I cannot see it in file explorer

How can I load books on to the reader?

any thoughts or advice? thanks

My only chance is buy them from Aliexpress.

Do you guys have any suggestions? The origami style seems cool.

And another question is: what you guys use for cleaning the rubberized back of Kobo.

Aura ONE Can't save changes in KOBO ereader.conf

After some tastes with kfmon, plato and KOReader — I try to revert all changes and back to my clear kobo firmware with minimal patches.
I'm installed Plato and KOReader by one click patch. Uninstal it by sh script posted in kfmon topic.
After all of this, i'm install dictionary by dictutil and start using.
All works fine, instead time notation. I'm using 24-hour format. I'm plug book and edit KOBO ereader.conf, after unplug and reboot change nothing.
I'm plug book to pc again and found, that my changes not saved.
I'm repeat it few times but change nothing. I'm try to wait few minutes after changes, copy file to PC, change and cope back with replace.

After all above I'm have two question:
1. How to fix it?
2. Does any way to back my reader to factory settings without any tails in files system after all of my experiments?

Does Kobo ship with "Signature Required"?

Just saw on the tracking page for my Clara that it says "Signature Required". I've not been anywhere near another person other than my wife for 58 days and 13 hours (yeah, I started tracking with an app when I first went into full isolation after being exposed to somebody at work who got very sick after visiting multiple pulmonologists to gather product requirements, I then got very sick myself and don't know if I had CV or something else), and now this? :-/

I guess I'll have to mask up and meet the driver outside and ask her/him to put the signature board on the hood of the car and step back while I sign.

Why doesn't my Forma remember the wifi password for a network?


I tap the network in the list of networks.
I then enter the password.
I connect to the hotspot.
I'm able to surf using the Beta browser and sync Pocket articles and books.

But, say, an hour later, it disconnects and I have to re-enter the password.

Is this normal?

Forma Wanna remove Series stuff from Collections (but keep them in MyBooks>Series)

I noticed that all of the series I've created in Calibre show up on my Kobo Forma in two places:

1. My Books > Series
2. My Books > Collections

I don't like seeing all of the Series stuff in Collections, since
1. I can see the Series in "My Books > Series", and
2. It adds another 10 pages to "My Books > Collections".


How can I remove Series stuff from Collections?

On my Kobo Forma > My Books > Collections, I currently have 41 pages of "collections" (created in Calibre as #myshelves). Each page shows 10 collections.

How can I fit more collections in a page, say, by decreasing line space or font size?

I think I'll be adding more Collections in the future, so my problem will be worse.

Need help setting up a Python GUI framework

Hello everyone,

I am a beginner when it comes to programming, although I did do a few things for the Kobo in the past (mostly for myself, but I have actually released my dashboard and a few other librairies I made).
However, all I know is high-level programming, and as soon as it gets technical (like reading touch events to handle touch interaction), I relied on someone else's work (mostly shermp's code on Github for the logic, and I used FBInk's magic to display images)).

I did try to make my own GUI toolkit, although I feel like I am just constantly working around the fact that I do not know a thing about how a computer works, or about how to install a proper GUI framework :chinscratch:
And having my own toolkit (which was developped for Kobo) isn't very useful if I want to make an app for any other device at some point, I would have to learn it all over again.

I would really appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction:
My goal is to be able to make an app, with say PySimpleGUI or directly with TKinter, PyGame or PyQt (with sergeyvl12 Qt port?) or anything really, just having to import it at the top my code.
I used NiLuJe's package to install Python. It obviously does not have pip (which is the only way I know to easily install any of the librairies), but therefore I am stuck : when I try to look it up on Google, it either expects me to have much more knowledge than I do, or it points me to tutorials which make an extensive use of "apt-get", "pip" or other such methods.

I have heard of cross-compiling, of people who used pre-compiled librairies. I can download such precompiled librairies, but what do I do then?

Can someone point me in the right direction?:help:
