Literally Cooked Kobo Glo HD

I plugged my reader in to charge this afternoon and came back to it about an hour later. The screen was frozen / unresponsive and there was a spot on the back of the reader that was very hot.

I tried the reset button as well as the power / reset button with no effect.

I took it down to my workbench and pulled the back cover off. I ended up burning my thumb (not too badly) when I touched the small-ish rectangular IC toward the bottom of the reader from the microSD card slot. That's a Ricoh RC5T619, which, according to the Ricoh website is a "power management IC".

I searched the interwebs in general and these forums for a similar topic and didn't come up with anything.

Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation?

As mentioned in the News forum, Good e-Reader is reporting a new Kobo model being tested by the FCC. The FCC link shows a Kobo Nia with 16GB of internal storage. Another of the few times, Good e-Reader has gotten a story right...

Has the Kobo Forma improved?

Hi all,

I was a day-one purchaser of the Kobo Forma, having adored the Aura One. I returned the Forma in favour of the Oasis 2, as the Forma felt cheap; it's buttons felt soft and tacky and the screen had some weird light inconsistencies.

Two years later, has this been rectified? I don't love the Oasis 2; I find it hard to hold and actually wish I could find the Aura One again.

Clara HD Sorting books without Calibre

Hi!

When I see all my books, without filtering by author, I would like to sort my books by Author, Series and then Title. Is this possible without appending the series name + index to the Title?

I am not using Calibre, only EPUB MetadataEditor, in which you can edit all metadata. If I take the example of Herbert's Dune series book 2 and 3, I have:

Author: Frank Herbert
File as: Herbert, Frank
Title: Dune Messiah
File as: Dune 2 - Dune Messiah
Series: Dune
Index: 2

Author: Frank Herbert
File as: Herbert, Frank
Title: Children of Dune
File as: Dune 3 - Children of Dune
Series: Dune
Index: 3

But if I sort by Author, or even title, these are sorted incorrectly (Children of Dune comes before Dune Messiah).

Funnily, Authors are sorted correctly by last name, so using the FileAs field, but Titles are not (sorted by the Title field).

If I sort by series, then Series are ignored, all series are mixed up and sorted by title only, ignoring TitleFileAs. And title sorts by title, ignoring TitleFileAs too.

Is there a way to configure this in the Kobo or am I stuck with having to re-edit th metadata on most of my epubs?

Eye strains when reading on my Kobo

Hi,

It took me a long time before buying an ereader but after reading many reviews and because my public library is closed, I decided to buy a Kobo LIbra H2O.

I think it's fantastic, but... BUT!

For some reason, my eyes hurt when reading for more than 10 minutes, and after that my vision is somehow blurry, like my eyes worked too hard or something alike.

I tried without the frontlight, and I feel like my eyes are straining because it is too dark. I tried with bigger font, and brighter light (but not too bright; I don't want to drain the battery). I tried to read under a lamp with a 40W 12" over my head (there was a glare....). Still the same thing.

This is weird because I read a lot and have no problem with paper books. I can also use my LCD computer screen for hours before I get such symptoms and even then it's not that bad.

Anyone can relate? So far some people told me to go check my eyes by a doctor, but I don't see how that could help if I don't feel bad with a paper book and only on the ereader.

Could it be about flickering or something like it?

Glo HD Loop execution stops unexpectedly after several cycles (rtcwake)

Hi there,

I am running a script to show a screensaver/wordclock on my kobo. The script is essentially a loop that displays an image on the kobo an then sends it to sleep via rtcwake. I'm connected to the kobo via telnet (Wifi) and start the script using nohup.

Structure of script:
Kill Kobo-Stuff (nickel etc.)
Shutdown Wifi to save energy
Looping the following
Do something
Send device to sleep (rtcwake -m mem -s 180)
repeat

This runs nicely for some time. But then the script unexpectedly stops. In this case (sent to sleep 180s) it breaks after about half a day. It appears that it breaks after a number of cycles rather than time (when increasing the time sent to sleep it runs much longer).

Most frequently the script stops in front of the rtcwake command but sometimes in the middle of the "do something"-part.

Any ideas what causes the script to stop and how to further debug?

PS:
What I tried so far:
- I echoed some debuginformation like running processes, battery-level, date vs hwclock, free memory - nothing obvious to me.
- enabled syslog via "devmodeon" and selecting all logging options. No syslog gets written to .kobo-Directory unless I hit save log (but this is not accessible since in the case of stopped script I can't access the menu). After resetting and saving the log, this log does not contain information of the events before the reset
- dmesg also only shows information after the reset
- tried to establish access via usbnet to connect after script stops. But was not able to get it running - I'm getting following error "insmod: can't insert '/drivers/mx6sl-ntx/usb/gadget/arcotg_udc.ko': invalid module format"

Clara HD Custom screensaver with plato?

Hi, I just got Plato and enjoy it a lot. However, I really wish I could have my custom screensaver. I dug around the files and figured out that Plato displays the 'dodecahedron.svg' file from the icons folder, so I switched that to an svg I made of my screensaver, but it just displays it really small, the same size as the original icon. Anyone have a suggestion? Is this a built in feature I've not come across?

Cannot Understand Why Title Appears This Way

Hi Folks,

new to the forum so let me know if this is not the right place. Admittedly I do not use my e-Reader often, but every few months when I go to send books to the device, this happens:

I never know why. I cannot fix it. I have not changed anything on the kobo device plugin, etc. What steps am I missing?

Kobo Forma sideloading ebooks?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the experience of reading .epub files on the kobo forma that are not bought from the kobo store?
I saw in one review that they say there will be a large empty gap on the bottom of each page.
Is it possible to make it look normal by filling out most of the screen, and also include page numbers etc?

I am quite new to e-books readers, so I don't have a lot of knowledge on how everything works.

How to Disable Browser on KoboLibraH20

I am not a computer programmer, just a mom who wants to disable the browser on the Kobo Libra H20 I just bought my daughter.

Can anyone please tell me how to do so (in the plainest of plain languages, please? I'm such a luddite!!!)

How to fix "4 dictionary downloads pending; sync to install" ??

Hi!

I had, a long time ago, replaced the dict-es.zip file (for the Spanish dictionary) by a custom one. Until recently, each time I would turn on the wifi on my Kobo Clara, the custom dictionary would get replaced by the official one, but now it does no longer do so: the custom one remains. I have tried everything to get back the official one, but there appears to be no way. The error message "4 dictionary downloads pending; sync to install" is furthermore displayed in the settings, and nothing happens when syncing.

PS: I might have messed up with extra locales a long time ago, but as well as I could, I've put back everything into place. I never patched anything.

I don't want to factory reset because I have plenty of annotations on side-loaded books that I would prefer not to lose.

My only question is: do you see a way for me to get back the official Spanish dictionary, and if possible get rid of the error message?

Kobo Aura edition 2 micro usb replacement

Hi all,

Recently my Kobo Aura n236 stopped to be recognized by my computer. Once I insert the cable it would prompt me to the box if I want to connect to the computer. But after that it would only charge, nowhere was my device mounted.. Through this forum I learned it matters to try different cables. Unfortunately after trying several cables multiple times also the charging is no longer working now! Not on computer nor wall charger. Kobo helpdesk says their only solution is to get a new device. I called to multiple shops and most said they can’t do it as they don’t have parts or they can do it for 80 euro. There was one shop who could help me replace the micro usb port if I am able to find the part.
I have been looking on ebay etc but can’t find it. The closest thing i could find is a replacement micro usb port for the Glo HD.
Does anyone know if they use the same ports? Or where I could find one?

Glo HD How to exit a "suspended" script (loop)?

Hi there,

if one is running a script without user interaction (e.g. picture frame, dashboard, weather-display ...) what is the best way to return to the ebook reader application without resetting the device?

Example "picture frame":
Current implementation is to have a "while true" loop that updates the image and then sends the reader to "suspend to ram" via rtcwake (e.g. for half an hour - so essentially the reader is in suspend to ram most of the time). What I noticed is that the reader wakes up from suspend to ram when the power button is pressed. I could use this to trigger the script to exit but I am not sure wether the wake up was due to power button press or just at the scheduled time.

I came up with the following ideas:
  • remember the scheduled wake-up-time, compare to actual-wake-up-time. If it differs by more than say 5s assume wake up was due to press of power button -> exit script, restart nickel etc.
  • Monitor /dev/input/event0 in some way
    Code:
    cat /dev/input/event0 | hexdump
    E.g. pipe to file and evaluate if file is empty or not (Was not able to use output of evtest). If file is not empty -> exit script, restart nickel etc.


Which would be the recommended way to implement this? Any other ideas to implement this - is there a way to detect the reason for wake up (i.e. scheduled time reached or power button)?

Clara HD How to rate books?

Hello ! I've recently experienced a peculiar thing on my Kobo: at the end of my reading, it asked me to rate it ! Never happened to me before or since, and I can't find any way to do it for the books I've finished. What is this sorcery? Moreover, is there some way to synchronize my Calibre library's ratings with my Kobo ?

Thank a lot in advance, I didn't find the anwser on the web and it's puzzling me.

[Proof of concept] BingMaps running as a fake book without killing Nickel

Hi everyone

I made a useless app once again. I wanted to know how well an app could be integrated within Nickel.
So I made a fake book, which displays a map, with which you can interact. Once you quit, your reader goes back to the normal reading mode.

It is availaible on github .
But do not expect to read the code, I did it very quickly and it is quite badly written.
I built it with my python librairies, which are available here: PSSM
As for how I managed to prevent Nickel from registering touch events, I used that.

IT WILL ONLY WORK ON A H2O, simpy because I do not own any other device and I can't adapt my librairies to handle touch events on other devices !

It requires NiLuJe's Kobo stuff (thanks again for your work!). and my Python librairies. You should decompress all my stuff in "/mnt/onboard/.adds/mavireck"
So at the end you should have :
"/mnt/onboard/.adds/mavireck/Python-Screen-Stack-Manager"
"/mnt/onboard/.adds/mavireck/Book-BingMaps"
"/mnt/onboard/.adds/mavireck/Kobo-Input-Python"

In the KFMon folder in my github there are the required files : "bingMaps.ini" goes into your KFMon config folder, and "bingMaps.png" goes in "/mnt/onboard/icons/"

If you really want to use it, delete all the jpg files, then check bingmaps.py. The first few lines are the ones you can tweak (like centerPoint and zoomLevel).

Aura ONE Strange behaviour

Long time member, rarely post problems, usually find solutions or what not via the forum, but I've not seen this one.

My device uses only sideloaded books from calibre, converted to kepub on transfer with series info added to database upon reconnect. Book covers are to retain dimensions etc, and conversion is at tablet setting (no resizing of internal images etc)

Anyway, onto the point, when I put my device to sleep, (book covers full size, info panel on screen) a weird behavior occasionally happens. The screen blinks, and refreshes in six regions. (picture the screen divided three across by two) with a blink occurring at the top left panel first, then bottom left, middle top, middle bottom, right top, right bottom.
Now, normally, i wouldn't mind this but after this behavior starts the database starts to become corrupt.

I've signed out of my account and signed back in, behaviour occurs a few days later.
I've factory reset the device, behavior occurs a few days later too.

Is it just my device getting knackered? Is it the firmware? (But i've not seen the issue listed anywhere else) or have I shagged the bastarding thing with too many books loaded (3 thousand,)

Problem enlarging pages and fonts

I bought all my grandkids a Kobo Clara HD ereader. I used a memory stick to transfer my books to the ereaders. BUT, the kids are not able to make the graphic novels or the book pages get large enough to fill the screen, the pages are small and stuck in a corner of the ereader. What's going on here? Help badly needed.

They can change the fonts of the books that came with the Kobo but not the stuff I have added with the memory stick from my own library.
