"Error Communicating With Device"

I'm in the middle of reloading my Kobo Auro One LE via Calibre, and just got the following error message while it was in the process of "Sending metadata to device" -

Can anyone translate into plain English what this means and how to fix it?

A small, seldom received, praise for the Kobo dictionary

I was almost afraid to buy a Kobo after reading so much about how bad their dictionary was. So far, every word that I've looked up has been there, so... yay.

Anyhow, I just saw a word that I didn't know:
nacreous

So, I clicked it. I get this definition:
"possessing the qualities of, consisting of, or abounding in nacre"

Grrr.... I hate those definitions. On my Kindle PW1, with the latest firmware that it received (maybe they're better now), that was it -- dead end. But on the Kobo I was able to click on a word in the dictionary and get a definition of that word! I hold down on nacre, and I get:
mother-of-pearl

Yay! That I know! That said, once I got to that secondary dictionary view, I could no longer click, though I was in a search interface where I could type the words if I needed to.

My new Libra H2O has a perfect screen

I know this doesn't make an interesting thread, but I feel there are many negative reviews about the Libra screen and its lighting. I hesitated for days before I hit the purchase button myself.

So, purely for the sake of balance, I want to point out that mine, which arrived today, is perfect. No uneven lighting and I can't see the LEDs.

interminable sync & battery drain

My Kobo Forma generally works great. (& I have a new and increased appreciation for all of its features now that I'm acquainting myself with an Onyx Note 2; the bigger screen is interesting, but Kobo's reading features fare outstrip the Onyx device, IMHO. The device even feels relatively fast now -- while I thought it sluggish before!)

But one thing that I can't seem to get rid of is, is the interminable sync. It just won't complete its syncing.

It's not that it doesn't communicate with the store. If I buy a book or add it to my collection from Kobo Plus (usually on my desktop), as soon as I connect the Forma, the book is downloaded and I can read it. But the sync icon doesn't stop churning and i never seem to get the message 'sync completed' anymore.

And I do have to remember to switch off wifi every time I've downloaded a book, since apparently the device will otherwise start to try and sync spontaneously during the night or some such and drain my battery while doing so. Since it seems to be interminable.

Do Kobo still have no solution for this? Surely they could build in something that prevents this from happening?

how do I bulk add books from kobo my books site

Hi e-reader,

I own a kobo forma and have most of my books a kobo.com in "my books". I have seen the video on how to use calibre and looked over the forums. However, I do not know how to add my books to calibre from the kobo site or my kobo forum. Could you take me step by step through it? I then want to add all my books from my kindle to calibre, so I have every e-book at one site.

Thanks,
Sandra

Is there a way to completely customize the Kobo's operating system? I know and I use the patches, but I would like greater freedom to do what I want with my Kobo.

Kobo Forma mini USB cable

Man I hate mini USB. I have to dig out my reading glasses every time I charge a device using that adapter.
I received my new Kobo Forma on Friday and I love it!
It uses a mini USB connection. However the cable supplied with the device doesn’t appear to have an up or down orientation like every other mini USB cable I have seen. The Forma female connection does appear to have an orientation. Is this a new type of reversible cable or do I need to up the magnification on my reading glasses?:chinscratch:

Which Kobo plugins/mods are worth using in 2020?

$

I've read through tons of threads on here about plugins and mods for improving the kobo experience, but most haven't been updated or replied to in 3-10 years. Furthermore, I've heard that the built-in kobo reader has gotten better over the years, as have other built-in features. I've just purchased a Kobo Libra H2O so I am wondering if there are any tried-and-true plugins/mods that improve the experience of owning a kobo with respect to reading experience and book organization (not interested in playing chess or anything like that).

I'm sure there are lots of shiny new plugins and mods that I will explore in due time, but for the time being I am searching for timeless things that have nearly consensus endorsement by experienced kobo users (things that have a 50/50, love/hate split would also be interesting to hear about).

The short list of candidates I've come across:

Kobo touch extended driver?
Kobo Utilities?
DeDRM/Obok (no question)
KoReader?

Are the first two no-brainers, or are people divided on them? I already know people are divided on KoReader and other alternative readers, but generally speaking are they as popular as they used to be? And if so is that due to reading experience and book organization reasons or just chess-like reasons? And are there any other basics I should know about?

Thanks in advance. Like I said, I know it's been discussed many times but there's seems to be a need for a more up-to-date discussion on this.

Libra Libra Cover Choice, Origami or Book?

So I’ve been away for a long time and finally bit the bullet and bought a white Libra through Chapters-Indigo (for the savings via conversion rate) so I can take advantage of the Overdrive integration since I discovered my County (San Diego) library system has a great selection of Overdrive books I want to read. Now I need to decide which style cover to order from Amazon; I’ve narrowed down to two with the same design in different colors. One is origami style the other conventional book style, I’m looking for opinions on these two styles:

Ambidextrous readers, which page-turn layout do you use?

$

I've been trying different region layouts. I first tried the layout with the page forward being wide and left, and menu being a small square in the center (second option), but I kept getting the menu when I wanted to turn pages,a nd still had to reach too far over when using my left hand -- further than I had to on my Kindle. Now I'm playing with the fourth option with the entire bottom 40% or so being forward, but then it feels like when holding it right-handed I have to hold it lower than I normally would.

I'd love to have a layout like I saw on the Pocketbooks where there was a forward and back on both sides....

Forma kepub rendering issue ( i know its a case of GIGO, but...)

so i have a poor quality text with many embedded spans, mid paragraph, like this:
part of paragraph text <span aria-label="page 17" epub:type="pagebreak" id="page_17" role="doc-pagebreak"></span> remainder of paragraph text

in calibre editor, sigil book view, ADE... they are harmless i.e. invisible.

so in fact i never noticed them until I began to read on Forma , and wondered why I was seeing so many "wrong", often mid sentence, paragraph breaks

it seems that on my forma, i get unwanted line breaks whenever such a span is encountered. i.e. the span is interpreted as a <br> , but is otherwise ignored

i am seeing this in a sideload from calibre, so dunno if its the extended driver , building kepub on the fly, that is struggling, or if it would also happen with a proper kepub source. [ the on-the-fly kepub conversion is not retained in calibre , I would have to look up how to capture a copy, in order to dig deeper

I do recall a similar thread ( but cannot find it now) where similar poor coding but with embedded anchors was causing a font size change on kobo.

i can, and did regex it all away, but what should a renderer do with such junk. Why is it NOT a problem on PC, but becomes a mess on Kobo.

is it the epub:type="pagebreak that is doing the damage, or would an embeeded span withonly a page_ID bit also mess up

Glo Random Sleeping

I have just joined and wondered if anyone else is having problems with their Glo.

It can go off at any time and the slider switch doesn't do anything, even holding it 'on' for 20,30 seconds.

Mine's quite old (relativly speaking) and just recently it just suddenly goes to sleep.

I have to do a paperclip reset - the green/blue lights flash, and it starts ok, but can then sleep again. Sometimes it just comes back on again without the reset.

I've done a factory reset and it's no different. The software version is 4.21.15015.

Any help would be appreciated.

Workaround lingering dirty bit on Mk.7 USBMS partition

$

As people with a Mk.7 device are probably aware, there's been a recurrent glitch which sometimes leaves the FAT filesystem of the partition exported over USBMS with the dirty bit set.

This makes most OS complain loudly about it when trying to mount it (and might cause the most stringent of 'em to refuse to mount it with write access).

I'm still not quite sure what's triggering the issue in the first place (but I figure Nickel is sometimes a bit hasty with how it unmounts the partition), but there are mechanisms in place to attempt to fix minor issues with the FAT partition automatically. These rely on the fsck tool from dosfstools. Unfortunately, like most of the sysroot, the version Kobo ships is *hilariously* old. So much so, that it doesn't actually know how to deal with the dirty bit.
Which means the existing fail-safe mechanisms are powerless to "fix" this issue.

I stumbled onto this entirely by chance (c.f., this post for more details), but the good news is that replacing that old binary with a recent version should take care of the problem (well, not the root cause, of course, but at least the built-in "fix" will now actually work).

So, here it is, in the form of a custom update package (i.e., a KoboRoot tarball), which you'll find inside the attached ZIP. As usual, put it (the tgz, not the zip) in the .kobo folder to install it.

Power Indicator Light

I’ve got an Aura One LE & a Libra H20, both with latest FW. Both units are set to show the indicator light while charging (in the Energy & Power settings). However, that light is never on while charging. The only time it’s visible is when the Kobo is performing an update to the FW. Anyone else have this issue? Seems this light worked as intended on my old Aura H2O.

Hello all friend, I got some problem after I trying to root, check the image attached, it freeze and rebooted after 15 min...

Now, I can not activate it by Wifi and Kobo Desktop App.
II try to Manual factory reset like this :

Here are the instructions for a manual factory reset:

Before you start:

Charge your eReader for at least 1 hour.
Make sure you have access to a Wi Fi connection.
Press and hold the power button until you see a black 'Powered off' screen.
Note: If you don't see the 'Powered off' screen, go to the next step.

Press and hold one of the page turn buttons.
While holding the page turn button, press and hold the power button.
Wait until the screen flashes and starts the reset process. It usually takes about 30-seconds for the eReader to start the reset process.

But it not working, any advice?
Thanks.

Forma Sorry state of annotations on Kobo Forma

$

I don't like sounding bitter, but honestly I am. The current experience of highlighting text, adding notes, and most importantly exporting them is so unreliable and unfriendly that it discourages me from reading the books I want. For me, half the process of reading a book is about keeping notes on what I'm reading.
  1. Newly highlighted text is not saved
  2. Existing highlighted text is removed inexplicably from whole books (I've lost annotations from two finished books by now)
  3. Exporting annotations is a laborious and per-book process, requiring access to a PC
  4. Exported annotations are in an unstructured format, with minimum additional data (chapters, dates etc)
  5. Comments, requests and bug reports go unanswered by Kobo (in this forum, in GitHub and in Kobo's support channels). We're left trying to figure out things on our own and come up with hacky workarounds.

As it stands, I'm trying to find a way to take photos of my Forma's screen and OCRing them on my phone. To me it feels possibly more reliable than how things are currently supposed to work.

I've tried using @davidfor's excellent Annotations plugin via Calibre and it was great while it worked. Alas, at some point, something, somewhere went wrong and the process broke irreparably. I thought I'd be better off keeping it as simple as possible, avoiding any and all dependencies in my process. Still, not even the simplest, on-device workflows are reliable.

I only wish some of this frustration reaches someone at Kobo and they decide to do something about it.
