Touch Wifi stability for weather display?

Hello folks!

To start, I just want to thank all of you for the excellent information contained in the forum, it's been a real help

What I'm trying to do is display an image (using fbink and downloaded via curl) on the kobo every 5 minutes.

Right now that's a simple shell script launched via telnet or kfmon and that works OK. Still need to figure out how to kill my script... maybe listening for any touch event or home button press. Any ideas on how to do that?

But my real issue right now is that the wifi connection on my Kobo Touch (N905) is REALLY BAD. Is there anything I can do to improve it? Old firmware? Soldering an antenna? Some magic wifi settings for the AP?

Any ideas would be appreciated, or feedback in general. You can find what I have so far here: https://github.com/tahnok/walter

Hi,

On my aura HD, a lot of long taps on a word to open the dictionary are interpreted as short taps (a page is turned) or not considered...

It's happen with all firwmares... Have you got a idea of the problem? is there a setting to change the delay to try a another value or verify mine?

Forma Best format from Standardebooks.org for Forma: their kepub or their epub3?

$

Standardebooks.org raises the standard of quality high for typography/formatting/coding. They would, for example, take works that are marked as Completed on ProjectGutenberg and make them even more beautiful. https://standardebooks.org/about/
So if I can find a book on that standardebooks.org, I go there.

Each book is available in four formats. Here's how the formats are described. (You can go to a Wodehouse book https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/p-...ight-ho-jeeves for an example)
Quote:

epub — All devices and apps except Amazon Kindle and Kobo.

azw3 — Amazon Kindle devices and apps. Also download the Kindle cover thumbnail to see the cover in your Kindle’s library.

kepub — Kobo devices and apps.

epub3 — Advanced format not yet fully compatible with most ereaders.
When I go to click on Read about which file to download, I'm taken to the following page:

Quote:

Which File Do I Download?

We offer four different kinds of ebook file for you to download. Which one you pick depends on which ereading device and ereading software you’re using.

1. Amazon Kindle devices and software (but not the Kindle application for iPad): download the azw3 file. You can optionally download the Kindle cover thumbnail if you’d like the ebook cover to appear in your library. (Thanks to a long-standing bug in the Kindle software, side-loaded ebooks don’t display cover images automatically. Complain to Amazon.)

2. Kobo devices and software: download the kepub file. This file is specially prepared to present the best reading experience for Kobos.

3. All other ereaders: download the epub file. This epub2-compatible file will work in all ereaders except Kindles. While this file will also work on Kobo, it’ll look pretty bad; please download our special kepub file for Kobo devices and software.

4. For advanced ereaders like Readium, and for readers who like bleeding-edge technology: download the pure epub3 file. Pure epub3 isn’t compatible with most ereaders yet, so only download this file if you know what you’re doing.

Based on these words, I have eliminated azw3 and epub. But that still leaves two formats: kepub and epub3. https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/artic...ks-app-support says that Kobo ereaders supports epub3.
  1. So which should I go for?
  2. When the text says "bleeding-edge technology" (under the epub3 guidance), what does that mean? How does that affect me as a reader?
  3. What can the Standardebook.org's epub3 files do that the kepubs can't?
  4. And, vice versa, what are the advantages of standardebook.org's kepub files over the epub3 files?

Hmm, My parents like my kobo more than me. (I like it a lot!). they have not been able to get books because our library is closed, so it will let them keep reading and busy.
for me, unexpectedly, I read the news now. just send it to my kobo, then an awesome experience. never really stayed up to date till now.
thanks again for all your buying advice. really like my purchase.

kepub vs epub render engines

Why does Kobo use two different rendering engines? Or, why can't they use the kepub rendering engine for epubs? I did a little experiment and changed an epub's extension to .kepub and side loaded it on my Forma and it worked. I don't know what all of the features are for a kepub to test it, I only tested that the fast scrolling worked.

KA1 can't be accessed

My Kobo Aura One has always worked fine with everything.

Now, it's launch is signaled by Windows with the normal sound, it is shown in the list of disks, and the <eject hardware> processes it fine so it can be disconnected.

Two programs that always have worked fine with it, ADE and Calibre, now don't acknowledge its presence. The <properties> <tools> <check disk> puts up a popup that says, "The disk could not be performed because Windows can't access the disk."

Any suggested remedies, please?

Thanks.

I am just wondering if there are more people who are using their ereader for different purposes.
I am using it as a flight computer.
Maybe it would be fun to exchange ideas and experiences here :-)

How to update firmware without affecting installed patch?

Please, can someone share how to update kobo reader firmware without affecting the patches installed?

I have several favorite patches installed, however, I'd to re-install it each time I update the reader's firmware.

Thank you so much in advance.

Overdrive holds and Clara HD question.

Just received my Clara HD and it seems to be a good upgrade from my old mini. I am having a challenge accessing holds that I have previously requested from my library.
Up to the new Clara, I have been able to successfully use overdrive to download holds to my Samsung tablet after receiving the library email

There does not seem to be a setting in the Clara overdrive menu to access the library holds. I know the book needs to be available on the kobo site and it is. I have tried adding Adobe digital to my laptop and have been able to download the acsm file and retrieve the book into Adobe. When I try to transfer from Adobe to the Clara the book shows on device. Even though I have activated the Clara from Adobe I get an error message when I try to open the book on Clara.

Tried uninstalls of Adobe, deleting and reloads of the acsm file

I have also tried using the older version of Adobe but couldn't load the acsm file in it.

Any suggestions I haven't tried?

Thanks in advance, and looks like a great forum!

Aura H2O Can I stop a Kobo H2O from marking the file system as dirty short of a factory reset?

$

I have a Kobo Aura H2O with a file system that always shows up with the dirty bit set, so when I plug into a Linux computer, it's mounted as read-only, which makes it impossible to add books. I've run fsck on the file system and didn't find any errors, so I'm unconvinced there's anything actually wrong with it. I can manually unset the dirty bit and remount the file system read-write and successfully add books, but the moment I unplug it and plug it back in, the file system is set as dirty again and I have to go through the whole remount procedure to make it usable. I'm assuming the Kobo software is responsible for setting the dirty bit. Is there any to force it to stop doing that short of a factory reset?

This problem seems to have started when my ereader ran out of charge while I was temporarily unable to use it.

Hello,

Does anyone here has an aura 2 version 2 ? I'd need to know if anyone has it for helping me out. The version can be checked with the serial number on the side of the machine : The 7th digit (not counting the letter) of the serial number of Version 2 devices is also always a 2.

Can anyone respond me if they have a 2 on the 7th digit of the serial number ? I'd need a little help from you to restard my reader. You can reach me by PM or at b20cent AT gmail DOT com.

Thanks for the answer. :)

Vincent.

Libra CorruptError: database disk image is malformed

Kobo Libra, *622 firmware.

The first time I connected it read all the titles. It only gave an error trying to read the annotations via Kobo Utilities.

I ejected and went to menu for the book and selected Export Highlights (the optional extra menu item that is enabled in .conf). That only had the first 1/4 of the book annotations. Going into the book and looking at annotations showed the last 3/4s of annotations gone.

Then reconnecting to Calibre I can't "communicate" at all. No titles listed.
I have sqliteman and DB browser for SQlite. But I'm only familiar with full SQLserver tools and years ago.

I've made a copy of KoboReader.sqlite and BookReader.sqlite

I searched here but couldn't see a thread on fixing the database.

a) I assume the last 3/4 of annotations are gone, or might some sort of repair work?

b) How is it fixed? There are no other unsaved annotations and all books are on Calibre.

c) I suppose all reading positions would be lost on a nuke it type repair, Not a big problem

Font relative sizes

Hi all !

I've recently been experimenting with fonts. I've been reading in Times New Roman for years, and recently tried bookerly (I'm loving those italics !)

I noticed, tho, that when switch from one to the other, the text size varies by a lot. I usually go for about 20 to 22 lines per page, but when going from times to bookerly i need to scale font down by 4 or 5 notches to get a similar size.

Is there a way to specify some sort of "factor" or "base size" for each font ?

Recenter images in kobo-justified mode

$

Hello,

I have the habit to convert all my epubs to kepubs, with a unified format.
One thing I noticed (and found mentioned elsewhere on the forum), it that when using the "justified" mode on the kobo, Centering information (mostly on images) are messed up.

I know that one solution is to enforce justified text when converting books in calibre then turn justify Off on the kobo. But for some reasons I'd like to find a way not to have to do that on some books. I'm ok with editing books and using a regex-find-and-replace, but I'm not very good at css. Is there some property that I could inject that would center images even in kobo-justifed mode ?

Aura H2O SD Card or Battery or both?

My H20 is exhibiting very strange behaviour that my forum research has not helped me figure out yet. Some inputs from those more experienced will help.

I'll just post the problem I am having right now first, but more context regarding the life story of this device follows, in case it is relevant.

Screen is completely blank. Trying to power on does not result in white-black-white flash. LED does not blink, just stays on and then goes off. Manual reset (the tap method) does not work. When connected to the computer, it detects as NS Blank Codex. Device has a suspect battery, as you will see in the details that follow. I am wondering if I need to check anything else, or if I should go ahead and open it up. And if I do open it up, what do I check first?

History

I posted about this device a long time ago. It had a funky battery that I "fixed" by letting it charge for 24 hours. The battery used to jump around crazily until I left it connected to the charger for 24 hours, and after that it seemed to be fine, as long as I kept recharging it regularly without letting the battery drain down too much.

Then at one point I did forget to recharge it and the battery died again, worst of all in the middle of an update (that I accidentally started by turning wifi on). It froze completely and 24 hour recharge or not, nothing worked. I finally did the manual reset (turn off, press power and tap bottom till it resets), and that got it booting again. But rather than wipe the device, it ended up finishing the interrupted update and everything was fine.

Until two weeks ago. I was reading on it and it froze in the middle of a highlight. I have no idea what the battery level was, but it must have been on the lower side. Nothing would reset it or reboot it, the screen remained frozen on the same page that I was reading. I read somewhere to leave the device alone and let the battery drain to zero and then start over. Sure enough, after leaving it alone for about 10 days, when I connected it to the charger again, the screen refreshed and I saw two squares at the bottom. It unfortunately froze again at that point. I figured probably because the battery drained to zero yet again, so left it connected for 24 hours.

Now, the screen at some point went totally blank, and nothing happens. Power on does not do the white-black-white flash, the LED never blinks, just lights up for a few seconds and goes off, and no amount of manual reset works. When I connect it to the computer, I get "NS Blank Codex" installing and then everything just goes off (as in the device unplugged chime on Windows).

Moreover, I can only get the power LED to come on occasionally when it is unplugged. It always comes on when connected to the computer, and frequently when connected to the charger, but almost never when unplugged. When unplugged, after it has been charging for a long time, I can get the light one or two times and then never, till I charge it again.

All of this leads me to believe its either dead battery or borked SD card or very likely both! Are there any other tests I need to do, or should I just go ahead and open the thing up? If I do open it up, are the old instructions for cloning the SD card still current, or have the new firmwares changed anything on that front? Do I still need a firmware from @davidfor or can I use the firmware from the hacks thread? Lastly, any idea if the Kobo Aura battery will work on the H20?

Aura H2O Quick Kobo newbie question

Hi all
I've been enjoying my H2O for some time but one thing bugs me.. and I have to believe it is really simple.... and that is, how do you enlarge an image in a book so you can see it better? It must be blindingly obvious, or maybe Kobo don't offer such a feature?
thanks in advance!

convert comics from different format than usual

$

I have comics of a different format from the usual formats used for comics (CBR-CBZ) and I would like to convert them first to epub, and then convert them to kepub with kepubify. I tried with Caliber to convert to epub and put the EPUB file directly into the kobo, the images appear smaller and it is very slow to load the book and turn the pages. after converting to kepub, the pages are not visible at all, they are all blank. (I have selected the resolution of the output as the one of the kindle paperwhite 3 since it is the same as that of the Kobo Clara HD)
