Instructions for patching firmware 4.20.14622

This patch thread is for firmware 4.20.14622 (8bb853a72a7c209047baedb2ef5b3c38eebf45e5):

Instructions for patching on Windows, Linux, or macOS with kobopatch:
  1. Download the Kobo firmware release
    You can find the download links here here.
  2. Download and extract the patch zip
    Download and unzip kobopatch_4.20.14622.zip from here.
  3. Copy the firmware file to the src folder
    Copy the original firmware you just downloaded into the kobopatch src folder.
  4. Install the firmware if needed
    Install the firmware on your kobo BEFORE proceeding with the next steps. You can do this by extracting the contents of the firmware zip into the .kobo folder and ejecting.
  5. Choose your patches from the files in the src folder
    Enable patches in the files in the src folder (or use the overrides in kobopatch.yaml to keep your options separate).
  6. Run kobopatch
    Double-click kobopatch.bat on Windows, or run ./kobopatch.sh on Linux or macOS. On macOS, you can drag it into the terminal and press enter (you may need to go to System Preferences - Security and Privacy - General to confirm that you actually want to run it).
  7. Install the patches by copying KoboRoot.tgz into the .kobo folder of your device
    If the patching succeeded, a file named KoboRoot.tgz will be created in the out folder. Copy it to the .kobo folder of your device. Safely remove your device once you are finished. On Linux, you may have to press Ctrl+H to show the .kobo folder.

Mine is on the way! I am excited, and not too worried about light banding. I saw on the kobo Reddit forum support told the OP that they were working on fixing the issue. that was a year ago. do any new users notice it?

Getting my calibre library ready for kobo forma questions

Hey guys, I am a longtime kindle user and I just ordered a kobo forma. My calibre library is completely catered toward the kindle's eccentricities, so I was just wondering if anyone had answers to my relatively niche questions. I really appreciate any insight you guys can give!

1. Is there a best image size for covers? I ask because the covers show up as screensavers as well on the forma. On my kindle, most of my covers are 651x990, so I was wondering if anyone found the sweet spot for image size and what that is.

2. Most of my authors are sorted by last name, first name because the kindle automatically re-populates them as first name, last name - but still sorts via last name for alphabetical purposes. I never figured out how to make calibre fix this, so I just manually changed the names in calibre to last, first and it worked fine for the kindle. Should I change that back to first name, last name for the kobo?

3. Any other insights on calibre management for those who also switched from kindle to kobo would be much appreciated! I've already heard about the kobo epub plugin, but I do not know anything else. Thanks!

Which Kobo for library books

I am looking for an ereader which will enable me to download books direct from my UK library, which uses Borrowbox - https://fe.bolindadigital.com/. Up to now I have been using a Kobo Glo HD. I like the reader but find it very frustrating having to download to ADE on another device first, with frequent problems caused by DRM. Would the Kobo Libra H20 enable me to do this, or is there another one at less than £150?

Stubborn .epub not showing

I've tried to send the same .epub to my Glo HD several times (via Calibre). Although it shows (green tick) as sent in Calibre, it's just not there... I've refreshed the metadata but that didn't help.

Clara HD Clara - voyance?

I just got a new Clara HD, my second. Went through the set up procedure, side loaded some books, tried to set up a collection for them, and discovered that the new Clara already had all the collections that existed on the old Clara. :eek: How did that happen?

Will it be possible for different collections to be set up on the two Claras? If I delete a collection from one device, will it then disappear from the other? :blink:

Kobo shop slow

Does Kobo have technical problems? The shop is incredibly slow tonight (on my desktop computer, from Europe). It's taking forever and ever just to buy a single book, download, &c.

And when I say "forever" I mean like, really... forever. It just doesn't download. (And that's only the 1 Kb link file for the Adobe software to *actually* download the book.) Weird shit.

I'm think that not normal. How to find what fit this space and clean memory?

Forma Tried to get PB chess

so, my kobo just came! after poking around a bit, I chose to get pbchess. it was going smoothly, got launcher.png, but then after I moved over the other files it froze and than updated. after the update... launcher.png still only opens a image, but now I have 12 pages of stuff for pb chess UI. somthing went wrong. what did I do? (assuming root folder is .kobo).
if I did something wrong, what? also, how can I delete all the stuff?

I noticed that the right side is slightly brighter, which is bearable, but on the left, near the buttons, there is a band of bight, white light. am I just crazy? that does not feel like a 270$ device performance. not to mention the battery went from 50 to 17% in a day

hello after lot off hours for search in the forum i tell you if its possible to hack a little my kobo for turn a special aplication .
it s an application for sailling she s have a server on raspberry pi named signalk.
i test the connection it s ok the browser go to the page but the page is blank.
i test a kindle app whith little mod but it difficult to program the good information
the second app it very configurable.
i take you the source of the ap if it possible to looking i m very happy.

Forma Battery tanking?

As many of you know, I just got a forma. I understand the light bands, but my battery stinks. with wifi off, in about 2 hours of reading, I lost 20% of battery. that's worse than my phone. :smack:. I use caliber, although not vigorously, just to put tor.com books on. so far I have only charged through my computer, to 100%. I HAVE NOT "repaired the device" as Microsoft suggests when I plug it in. I have not done a factory reset today, however yesterday after making a mistake getting pb chess, it had to repair its self, and that triggered a reset. even before that, the battery drained fast (wifi was on then). any ideas? I am on the latest firmware according to kobo sync.

TD;LR kobo forma battery issues
  • 10% a hour
  • wifi is off
  • factory reset due to error yesterday
  • still had issue yesterday
  • Barly use calibre (most books from overdrive)
any ideas?

Hi! I am new to the world of e-readers, I study computer science, so you can speak in a "technical" way if you want, I was wondering only one thing ... what exactly do the patches entail? why should you do it? do I need to activate developer mode to install them? Is this mode safe, or does it expose sensitive data contained in the e-reader to the network (if there are any)? Do I need to remove the SD card from the reader in order to install the patch? (I don't think since currently if I'm not mistaken it is possible to remove it only from Clara HD)
Is there a well done post with a list of all the mods? Or do you have to go crazy looking for them and looking for the right versions in the forum? :help:

Aura E2 Kobo aura edition 2 keeps freezing

Hi I bought a Kobo aura e2 for my wife. After use a few months it starts freeze and not work. Sometimes I make hard reset it responds sometimes doesn't . Of course can't use it now. Don't know firmware or hardware problem how can I fix it?

Why can't my Kobo forma download this article I Pocketed:

The article appears on the Pocket app (in Android). Other articles from medium.com that I have pocketed do show up on my Kobo Forma. It seems to be just this one medium article. Can anybody else tell me if they have problems seeing this article on their pocket list in their Kobo?
