Using ebooks from my PC

I can transfer epub books easily enough from my PC to the reader but I cannot figure out how to make the Kobo tablet (a new forma) pick up the correct author name. I've tried putting them in a directory of the user name or appending the user name to the title in the formats
"title - ln, fn" (as generated by calibre) when using copy to device
"title - fn ln" (created by me with a file manager while connected).

In all cases the author appears as ln, fn under the title when listing by book, and listing by author gives two identical listings, one under ln and one under fn.

Oddly if I sort by author on first name or last name the list is always identical.

I have no idea where the kobo gets this info from but it does not appear to be from the filename. Are there hidden files I need to create/rename? This is not a problem when I only have half a dozen books on the device but it will me when I put more of my library there.

Thanks in advance

Adobe ID problem with Inkpad 3 Pro

Hi,

Hopefully someone here can help me as the Pocketbook support has been really awful. I am having trouble side-loading my public library books from Overdrive on to my ereader. I am able to download them on to ADE and from there I transfer the file to my ereader.

My ereader keeps telling me to create an Adobe ID and the file might be corrupted or protected? But when I go to accounts/synchronization I see the Adobe ID there (it's the one connected to the Pocketbook cloud).

So I am completely lost as to what the problem is as from everything I have read it should work.

Problems with Kobo and Dropbox

Hello. I’m trying out the Dropbox thing with my Kobo Forma. I have downloaded Dropbox on my PC, iphone, and iPad. I have moved books from Calibre (on my PC) to Dropbox without a problem. I can read the books on my Kobo with no trouble (perfectly formatted). However, when I try to read them within Dropbox on my phone or iPad, there are all these weird characters and symbols all over the place making it impossible to read, and it does not sync to last page read. If I export the book from Dropbox to iBooks, there is no problem. I suspect this has something to do with why it is not syncing to the last page read, which is kind of the point of the whole thing isn’t it? Any thoughts on how I might correct this issue?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Aura ONE Battery Woes, and flaky tech support

I'm failing to get anywhere with my Aura One, as it's been pretty unreliable in regards to power over the last few months.

Firstly: The Kobo charges fine, it syncs, everything is working as it should. Got the latest firmware (4.18.13737) and had a restart. Charged it up, left it a day, went to read the next night and the battery is reporting 18% left.

Then: Disabled wifi, sync, charged it up, left it overnight again (around 10-11 hours) and I've got 60% battery left.

Frustrated, I contacted Kobo.

(09:42:42 AM) SUPPORT: Thank you for the information. I will be more than happy to assist you.
(09:42:56 AM) SUPPORT: Please synchronize your account
(09:43:04 AM) SUPPORT: Do you know how?
(09:43:14 AM) Richard: On my reader? Yes. One moment.
(09:43:37 AM) SUPPORT: In the meantime, I'll explain
(09:44:17 AM) SUPPORT: By syncing your account, you are downloading a small update
(09:44:33 AM) SUPPORT: It improves your communication with our server
(09:44:47 AM) SUPPORT: This was made by our team to solve your problem
(09:45:08 AM) SUPPORT: If it does not solve your issue in two days, please contact us again
(09:45:17 AM) SUPPORT: We will provide all the assistance you need
(09:45:45 AM) Richard: Right.
(09:46:36 AM) SUPPORT: Can I assist you with anything else?
(09:46:52 AM) Richard: No. I'll keep an eye on the battery now.
(09:47:04 AM) SUPPORT: Charge it for at least 3 hours
(09:47:22 AM) Richard: Okay.

So, I've synced with their "special patch", left it on charge all day whilst I'm working. 24 hours later the battery is at 10%. I was dubious about this (hence my one-word answers at the end of the chat log), and my suspicions were confirmed.

So it's on charge again, and I'm simply not trusting the device right now. I'll be in touch with Kobo again, but to be perfectly honest, what can they do with a reader that's out of warranty and not made any more?

Is anyone else having this issue? I'd just like my reader to last a week on standby at least. My PRS-505's can go almost a couple of months without needing a charge. Granted they don't have wifi, but they are using near-12 year old eink tech.

Forma Which overdrive ebooks from your library can't be downloaded/read on your Kobo?

As for me I've noticed that the following books can be read on the OverDrive app or the Libby app on my Android, but are not downloaded onto my Kobo Forma:

Seven Habits of highly effective people, Stephen Covey
Alone Together, by Sherry Turkle
Trump's America, by Newt Gingrich
Trumpocracy, by David Frum
Getting to Yes, by Roger Fisher

Can you download and read these books on your Kobo device?

improved navigation in new firmware (and Dropbox question)

A few weeks ago I was surprised by a new update of the firmware on my Forma, and I must admit that this time for me it was a really pleasant surprise. I don't want to detract from the problems some users seem to have with it, problems that may occur or ways in which it still leaves something to be desired. But so far I haven't found anything that works less well than it used to myself, and I find the redesign of the navigation interface (e.g. for skipping from chapter to chapter) a real improvement over its predecessor. Think that deserves to be noted, alongside the (again: no doubt also valid) complaints.

I also noticed the new Dropbox feature. I have a Dropbox account but haven't linked it to the Forma yet, because I'm unclear as to what it will do. Do you have to make a dedicated books folder in Dropbox? Or will the Forma just scan all of your Dropbox for any available e-book files?
And if so, will it then automatically download them? Or does it work somewhat like the Kobo Shop library: the books are listed, but you have to manually give the command to download a title if you want to read it?

Buy from Kobo in the US?

Hello folks,

I'm wondering whether it is still possible to purchase an ereader via the Kobo website from a US address, or will you automatically be sent to WalMart's site.

I'd rather have a root canal than buy from WalMart.

I had ko-reader, now I don't

I bought a kobo glo from aliexpress, it had koreader. But the firmware was from 2014 so I had to update it. But after updating, the wifi wasnt working, so I reset it. Now ko-reader is no longer there.

How do I get it back? Or do I have to install it separately?

Does anyone still use a Kobo Aura H2O?

I mean the first edition Kobo Aura H2O. Not second edition.

I am curious because I have one, but these days people talk more about the Clara HD, Forma, H2O Libra, etc. I am curious if people still use this device and how it's holding up for you.

Mine was very laggy after turning it on. I hadn't used it for 5 months or so. Then I reset it, reloaded books, and now it's OK. But I do wonder if it'll be laggy again? If this is a sign that it is dying? The lights near the bottom are also kind of shadowy. I'd be sad if it was dying. I sure hope not :(

Forma How can I read ePubs from EBSCOhost (academic library) on my Kobo?

I have ebook-borrowing privileges at the university I studied at. Their catalogue (as with most academic libaries) is with EBSCO(host). When I search for ebooks on their EBSCOhost catalogue, I can limit/filter for just ebooks. I then see some ebooks are available as "PDF full-text", whereas others are available also as "epub full-text".

How can I read these ePubs on my Kobo Forma?

UPDATE: According to Oxford University, I can get them to my Kobo through Adobe Digital Editions. So I guess I gotta find a way to get ADE working on my Linux system. But that's another question.

Libra H2O case

Hello,

I've been using my Libra H2O without a case since I received it a month ago. But I'll be doing some traveling for the holidays and don't want to damage it.

Is anyone using the Kobo case, and if so is it worth $40 since there are no 3rd party cases available.

Terminal user accounts?

Whilst my Aura H2O was attached to a serial console, amongst the many messages output I noticed a login prompt pass by.
Poking around on an SD card image I notice that there is a passwd file in /rootfs/etc with the following content:
Code:

root::0:0:root:/:/bin/sh
ftp::14:50:FTP User:/var/ftp:
bin:*:1:1:bin:/bin:
daemon:*:2:2:daemon:/sbin:
messagebus:*:30:30:messagebus::/bin/false
nobody:*:99:99:Nobody:/:
admin:$1$$CoERg7ynjYLsj2j4glJ34.:0:0:Linux User,,,:/home/admin:/bin/sh

Does anybody know if these accounts are used? If so what might the passwords be, presumably they are the same for all Kobos as they only relate to using the console.
If I ever get my Aura to work again I will need to do some stuff via the serial console, so it would be useful to know the root/admin logins.

suggestion for kobo cover

I recently replaced my kobo mini with kobo clara hq.
I diy my own sleep cover for my clara hq.
In designing the diy sleep cover, I wondered why kobo did not design a kobo case that could attach the screen cover only.
The only screen cover will reduce the weight and exposure the nice design non-slip back of the reader. In order for attaching the screen cover, the design of the reader has to be modified.
Looking for a better design kobo superior to others.

Forma Why do book "Preview"s appear on my Kobo? How do i block Previews?

Why do book previews appear in my Kobo reader? I never chose to have these previews? It seems to happen when I get the book from a public library's overdrive, and then I remove the overdrive book from my Kobo. Is there a way to block previews from materializing on my Kobo?

Forma How can I have my books' subtitle in its own line, under the book's title? (see pic)

Please take a look at a photograph of my Kobo screen. You'll see two instances of the same book:

1) The top one is my personal copy
2) The below one is a library/overdrive copy. This version has the subtitle ("How Seeing the World through the Lens...") is below the title ("Reading People) and is in smaller text.

Is there a way I can have all my personal books' subtitle in the same way? How?

Clara HD Kobo Clara HD fell into the water

Hi guys,

My Kobo Clara HD fell into the water.
I picked it out of the water quicky (after one second), opened it and jently dried.

Kobo was working, but it was really slower and after few seconds (I barely have time to open some book and go to the second list, or open some item in menu) it stucked and automatically restart...I tried it multiple times and same situation.

So I deduced there is maybe som problem with system. So I connect Kobo to the PC and make backup.

After that I tried factory reset (both via menu and manual), restoring started but after few second it also stucked...I started the restore again but same situation - it is working few seconds (progress bar dots are moving), but after that it stay stucked ...I wait more than hour but nothing happened.

Do you have please any suggestions what can I do?
I'm thinking that maybe I can try to delete SD card and copy there new system image.

I purchased 5 Libras and 2 Formas and all of them have light gradient issues.

On the handle side of these devices the screen is slightly darker and "cooler" in color temperature. This issue does not disappear at any color temperature or brightness. Both Formas had the color temp/brightness issue as well as a significant dark band at the very edge of the screen (handle side).

For people considering trading in devices with these issues, my small sample seems to imply it is unlikely you will receive a unit with a "perfect" screen.

I ended up keeping only the one with the least dramatic gradient and returned everything else.

Is Libra/Forma worth upgrading if you already have a Clara and H20 Edition 2?

I have Kindle Oasis,Clara HD and the Aura H2O Edition 2 6.8" still very good devices. Is the Libra or Forma worth the upgrade or am I better off sticking with my 6.8" H2O?
Just curious how people feel about it that also have the Oasis/Clara/ H2O 6.8"/Forma

Thanks
