Hi,
after the crash of my Kindle 3, I am looking for a new device and I think it will be Clara HD.
My main issue before the buy, that is rather difficult to confirm w/o having the device with me and testing all the advices presented here, is - I need to be able to transfer highlights and annotations from sideloaded books to PC as easily as possible. I buy only DRM-free books from local resellers (e.g. kosmas.cz) and I don't want to support DRM in any way... which locks some solutions to this issue for me.
On K3, I became used to transferring a text file that held history of all highlights and annotations and then used my VBA script to turn that into a manageable Excel table, so I am used to some kind of extra work in this regard.
I am also not particularly dependent on keeping formatting of the original text. It would be a nice bonus, but it is not required.
I use Calibre, so perhaps Kobo Utilities could do it? (last update seems to be 2017 though...). Or any other solution working on Clara?
Any advice, pls?
Best,
pavel

Does the Aura One offer any kind of basic statistics for (sideloaded) books that are not kepubs? I know some of the extended statistics are only available for that format, but I was wondering what kind of information the Aura One offered for any other format.

I have a registered Vox, so I got an email this morning that said in part,
Quote:
As of February 28, the Kobo Vox will no longer be supported by Rakuten Kobo*. This means it will no longer receive software updates, and will not be able to connect to the Kobo eBookstore. If a factory reset is performed after February 28, Kobo Vox will not exit the setup process. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
|
I don't know if there's anyone here that still uses a Vox, but it was designed to require a connection to Kobo the first time it's powered up or after a factory reset. According to the email, that will no longer be possible after February 28.
If you are still a diehard Vox user and want to protect yourself against a failed setup in the future, the version check can be spoofed. I posted brief instructions a few years ago
here. I just checked and all the files mentioned are still on the server, so you've got a month to retrieve them before they're gone.

Hi,
I am new here - but I couldn't find anyone having this issue....
This is about pocket integration, and page turning. On some articles (long ones) the page turning slows down dramatically (>10s) after an image has been shown.
Before the image comes up, everything works fine. After the image was there, the article becomes unreadable.
Any ideas what I could try?
Thanks a lot...
- Christian
ps.
here's an example article where I can reproduce it every time

We have important news for you regarding your Kobo Arc tablet.
Your Kobo Arc tablet requires a mandatory software update by February 28, 2019. To stay aligned with global internet security standards, we are releasing a mandatory software update for all Kobo Arc tablet models. Without this update, your Kobo Arc tablet will no longer be able to exit the setup process after a factory reset is performed.
Rest assured that no items in your Kobo library will be affected; you will continue to have access to all reading material you have purchased or downloaded from Rakuten Kobo.
How to update your tablet's software
Follow the prompts on your Kobo Arc to install the update before February 28. If you are unable to do this before February 28, you will need to install it manually by following these steps:
1.Open the Settings app.
2.Tap 'About Kobo Arc' at the bottom of the Settings list.
3.Tap 'System updates'.
4.You should see a 'Check for updates' message.
5.Tap 'Check Now' and follow further instructions.
Read with Kobo with the free Kobo App
You can download the free Kobo App available for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, and read with Kobo on a device you already own.
If you have any questions or concerns about this message, please contact Kobo Customer Care.
Last update was over 4 years ago. They couldn't even be bothered to update the revision number on this one.

Okay. I currently own five older Kobos. Two WiFis, two Touches and a Mini. I understand that, after February 28th, the WiFis and (apparently) the Mini will no longer work on Kobo's Store or with any of their services (no syncing either). What I don't quite understand is the mandatory updates. Currently my Mini and the one Touch are at 3.19.5761 and the other Touch is at 5.12.12111. I kept the Mini's WiFi on for syncing and downloading from the bookstore, as well as the one Touch. But I liked having the one Touch at the 3.19.x firmware, since I liked how it worked with the 3.19.x patches.
Now we have mandatory updates. Question(s); since the Mini won't work with Kobo's Store anyhow, is there any reason to worry about the mandatory update? Or is that update still required to use the Mini, even with side-loaded books and not using Kobo's services? Same questions apply to the Touch that I don't want to update. By the sound of it, these will work UNTIL you have to factory reset them for whatever reason, then (if you haven't updated them) they won't work at all? Is this right? Does the same go for the WiFis? I don't know if they're at the right update or not but (even though I'll probably be getting rid of them, it would be nice to know if they'll work when (if) a factory reset is required).
So, is the choice upgrade now if you want to use your Kobo (even for side-loading) in the future?

Im looking for a website that has step-by-step photos, or a YouTube video that shows the steps of tearing down a Kobo aura one. Has anybody seen one?

Hi, is it possible to resize the RAM partition of a KT2.0's SD card ?
(I know that the kobo uses a part of the sd card as RAM memory, so would make it wider)

I have just replaced my Sony PRS-T1 with a Forma and really like it.
When I go into My Books>Authors>Sort:last (or first) name, some books are listed twice under the first name and the last name. For instance War of the Worlds appears twice in the list, once under" H. G." and once under "Wells". Similarly "A Place of Execution" has entries under "Val" and "McDermid".
All these entries appeared correctly in the Sony.
In Calibre the authors name is entered using the format lastname, firstname
I can't work out why this should happen with some authors and not others, and why for one book by a particular author and not the other 8 books by the same author!
In the My Books>Books list, all titles/authors appear correctly - i.e.
"War of the Worlds
Wells, H. G."
Thanks

I love my Aura One but I also liked how the Forma felt in my hands. Is it worth upgrading? Do you love your Forma?

Greetings, fellow Kobo owners!
Does anyone here purchases Japanese ebooks to read on their Kobo? I've only recently realised that given that Kobo is somewhat popular in Japan, you should be able to get ebooks for it in Japanese. Given that eventually I'd like to learn more of the language, it'd probably be a good thing to have, some books to try my skills with.
So, any place that would sell me DRM-free (or easily removable DRM :) Japanese books that will work fine with a Kobo reader? I'm specifically after books; mangas are bit easier to acquire, although not entirely in a legal manner... :D
Thanks!

I have a Kobo Glo Hd with a faulty (pkysical) plug. I can plug in my external battery and charge it, I can sometimes plug in my computer and charge it, but virtually never hve the computer see it as a device. The wireless is completely functional so I can load books through Calibre.
I bought a Clara to get around the problem.
I would like to be able to read a given book on either, then sync the bookmark (where to restart reading) to the other (clearly preferably wirelessly) Anyone have any idea how I might do that?

i have been using Calibre and not having difficulties with my Kobo Glo and Aura One until my last 15 or so downloads, none of which show the cover art on the thumbnails- they are all blank with titles only. selecting a book will display the cover art on full page but the thumbnail will remain blank - any thoughts? Most often, these are books from eBook.bike but some have come from LibGen. My Kobos now have about 800 books on them- could this be the problem?

I ordered a Kobo Clara back in january. Unfortunately it had some massive light bleed issues so I returned it and asked for a new one.
The new Kobo arrived today. I unboxed it, put the charger into the e-reader and powered on the Kobo. I get to the screen where you can choose a language but the touch screen is frozen/unresponsive. I've tried powering it off several times, tried force rebooting it (but I don't get a restore screen), I've tried manually resetting it but it doesn't work. It turns off, and then when I turn it on again I come back to the language screen and it's still frozen.
Has anyone had the same problem here? Is there a fix or should I return it, again? :(

Is there a way to edit the "Kobo eReader.conf" file such that you change the behaviour of the buttons so that they *both* turn a page forward?
I saw that's a feature of a so called "patch" that can be installed for the Kobo. I assume this is a mild kind of hack of the firmware that allows for more customization. But I don't really feel like installing that patch (just yet). However, if it would be simply a matter of adding or chaning a line in the "eReader.conf", I could try doing that.

Hi, I've done a search and found some info on the "insomnia" patch to stop WiFi switch off but there doesn't appear to be a version available (I'm happy to install an old version of the firmware). I'm an XCSoar user and need to use the wifi continuously to connect to a T-Beam SoftRF Flarm device. When the wifi stops I need to restart XCSoar and loose all my flight information.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

If I remove a book from my Kobo Aura One, will my annotations be indefinitely spared, so that if I download the book onto my Kobo, they'll still be there? I tried quickly deleting a book and downloading it again, and at least then, the annotations were there, but is there a limit to how long or how many of them they get spared?

Do I just copy my .kobo folder to my new device? Was looking through the koreader wiki but didn't see anything specifically about this. I would like to transfer all my stats and book progress(es) to my new forma.
Thanks!

I've been hearing a few things about the Kobo .kepub format but cannot find a lot of information on it.
* What features or capabilities, if any, do you get from .kepub on a Kobo device, that you wouldn't get from a Calibre-generated .epub file?
* How do you 'convert' a liberated .epub file to the .kepub format? I don't see options for this in Calibre.
