Clara HD Sharpness Kobo

Hi,

About a month ago I bought the Kobo Clara HD, I come from a Kindle 7th generation, and one thing that brings me a little fly, is that, the first page that refreshes looks perfectly, sharp and with a "100%" black, but which happened to the next page, already loses the color, some words are more gray than others. All this has made me tell the reader to refresh each page, but it is a bit awkward to be watching the transition every little while.

I wanted to know if it's my thing, or the Kobo. Also indicate that I have applied some patches of geek1011 and I don't know if it could have been altered at some point. I use a new source the Amazon Ember, but with the Kobo Georgia the same thing happens to me.

Thank you very much!

Clara HD Why does my Clara forget my wifi?

In case it matters, I have auto sync turned off. I do a manual sync when I have a new library book to read, so maybe every few days.

It seems like about half the time when I tell it to sync, it looks for wifi networks and doesn't find any. I live in an apartment building and there are always numerous wifi networks up and running around me so even if my wifi were down it should see the others.

Usually if I abort and try syncing again it will then see my wifi and automatically connect. But occasionally I have to reenter the wifi password.

Does this happen to everybody or is it just my Clara?

Can't open books on Overdrive

Hi,

Recently i borrowed a few books from Overdrive onto my Clara HD. When i tried to open the book to read it, a sign popped up that said it couldnt open the book and asked me to sync the ereader. At first, I borrowed more books and tried to open those to see if it was the book problem but that same thing happened.

I have synced and repaired the device but the book still cannot be opened. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Kobo Libra problem fixed?

Recently i have been noticing that lesser and lesser people are complaining about the well-know light strip problem at the side of the Kobo Libra.

Is it possible that Kobo has fixed the problem in their new batches of Libras?

Embedded audio in a fixed layout epub3 (Kobo reader for iPad)

Hi folks,

I’m a graphic designer preparing an ePub3 fixed layout book to be sold in the Kobo store. This is my first ePub with embedded audio so please excuse my ignorance—I’m new to this and I’m sure there’s much I don’t know.

The details:
  • We’re producing a linguistics text with a number of short embedded audio files. These files are in mp3 format (from what I understand this is the recommended audio format for embedded audio in ePub3). Note I have tried a few other formats for troubleshooting purposes, with the same results.
  • The book is being built in InDesign, and exported to a fixed layout ePub from InDesign.
  • The embedded audio clips work just fine in Apple Books.
  • The embedded audio clips do not work in the Kobo reader for iPad. If you tap the play control for the audio clip, nothing happens.
  • The audio player is visible in Kobo, but the clip shows as 00:00 in length (in the test file I'm attaching it should be 3 seconds).
  • As a Hail Mary, I’ve tried a handful of different audio formats as well as a few video formats, and can get NONE of them to play in the Kobo reader.

Am I missing something fundamental here? It is my understanding that Kobo for iPad should play embedded media, but no matter what type of file I try to embed, I can't get anything to trigger and play. And I can't seem to narrow down where exactly the issue is.

Embedded media file format? I've tried a bunch of different formats with no success.

InDesign export settings? There really aren't any settings that relate to embedded media.

Kobo app itself? I can't find any other (free) books with embedded audio to try, but from everything I understand they should be supported in the Kobo app for iPad.

If my problem is not immediately apparent from the description and anyone wants to actually take a look at the files I'm using for testing purposes, I've attached the source (InDesign) files as well as the exported ePub.

Thanks in advance for any insights you might have.

Glo HD dmesg* and syslog* files

Two files seem to be created every time I turn the reader on or wake it and are stored in the .kobo directory. The file names add the date to them like so:

dmesg-2020.02.29-13.26.15
syslog-2020.02.29-13.26.15

I only noticed them when I finally updated the miniclock to the most current version, but there were 74 of each file name and I've no idea where they're coming from. Debugging is turned off for the miniclock (and I think those files are named differently, and there's no mention of "miniclock" in the logs), so I'm pretty certain that's not the cause.

I do patch though, did I mess up something in a patch maybe? Or is this possibly normal now?

Looking at geek1011's Kobo Firmware Download page, it is showing that 4.20.14601 is now available for all devices other than the Kobo Mini.

The Kobo Desktop application for Windows is also updated to Kobo Desktop 4.20.12714.

I am aware that there were games available for older gens, but that there are not available now due to the change in PPI, but is there a workaround for this, or a 3rd party mod that has the same functionality? also looking for an app for notetaking, and one for doodling. thanks for the help! :thanks:

This patch thread is for firmware 4.20.14601 (30c2f5c348a74f67a162021a5d8cad7d4893b088):

Instructions for patching on Windows, Linux, or macOS with kobopatch:
  1. Download the Kobo firmware release
You can find the download links here here.
  2. Download and extract the patch zip
Download and unzip kobopatch_4.20.14601.zip from here.
  3. Copy the firmware file to the src folder
Copy the original firmware you just downloaded into the kobopatch src folder.
  4. Install the firmware if needed
Install the firmware on your kobo BEFORE proceeding with the next steps. You can do this by extracting the contents of the firmware zip into the .kobo folder and ejecting.
  5. Choose your patches from the files in the src folder
Enable patches in the files in the src folder (or use the overrides in kobopatch.yaml to keep your options separate).
  6. Run kobopatch
Double-click kobopatch.bat on Windows, or run ./kobopatch.sh on Linux or macOS. On macOS, you can drag it into the terminal and press enter (you may need to go to System Preferences - Security and Privacy - General to confirm that you actually want to run it).
  7. Install the patches by copying KoboRoot.tgz into the .kobo folder of your device
If the patching succeeded, a file named KoboRoot.tgz will be created in the out folder. Copy it to the .kobo folder of your device. Safely remove your device once you are finished. On Linux, you may have to press Ctrl+H to show the .kobo folder.

Pocket won't sync at all

I noticed yesterday that articles I saved in Pocket weren't syncing on my Kobo. I checked to make sure they weren't in the incompatible web format that Kobo can't export. I logged out of my pocket account in Kobo, and when I logged back in it now says "your Pocket is empty", none of the articles that I recently read or achived before I logged out appear now, even if I can see in my browser that they're saved. None appear on my Kobo. Any idea of what's happening? Thanks!

Clara HD Japanese and Chinese characters

I have a number of Chinese and Japanese translated novels which often have footnotes etc which have Chinese and Japanese character in them ie explanation of translation etc. However they don't display at all in the book at all, despite being able to see them when checking the epub in calibre.

I'm assuming the issue is that the kobo doesn't have a font to display them in. Is there a way for me to add one? Or the the issue possibly something else?

Bit of help understanding modding

Hi, there is a few things I would like to know about kobo modding, as I am new to it.
1. how to get the full games patch (page 2 too!)
2. how to get Kobo Launcher
3. how to get Pb chess
4. how to get custom images thing
5. know what the hell is up with nickel, what is it?
I don't want to do anything that can brick my 250$ device (unless its a result of being stupid), or hardware-based (aside from removing the sd card). it would be helpful if I got a step by step for the how-to get ones, as I am new and this is not beginner-friendly, and i can't find any good guides.
kudos, Scaledish

Libra Innards

Pops open easily.
finger / thumbnail / plastic plectrum at bottom corner / long edge diagonally opposite from the power button.

A connector near on/off cable for either JTAG or low voltage serial. Obviously the biggest cost saving change would be to have the power button on the main PCB, either to top or bottom.

It's not a real waterproof design, the HZO coating will just ensure it survives accidental dunking.

Serial numbers blanked out.
