Clara HD Access chess game in Nickel

Hello !

I've somehow become aware of the fact that there's a chess game installed by default in Nickel, somewhere behind the scenes, but for some reason access to it was removed.

My question is how to enable it again. Is there a way? I've been searching a bit, and all I find for now is how to install chess through the KSM. It appears as well that on older devices it is accessible from the parametres, but I can only notice that it isn't the case any more...

So, did some of you achieve to use chess from Nickel on a Kobo Clara ?

Forma Decal Girl

Decal Girl https://www.decalgirl.com/ now has skins for the Forma btw. I mentioned this in passing in a review of the Forma sleepcover, but I know a lot of folks here like adding these skins to their devices.

I still have not gotten mine, there was a mix up in the address which got corrected so hopefully sometime this week *knocks on wood*.

It appears to be a three piece set, one for the back, one for the button area, and another to go around the bezel of the screen.

Just wondering if all Formas have the Walmart branding on the start screen or if it's only the ones purchased through Walmart. It wasn't on my Aura One that I also bought through Walmart so just wondering.

Desktop App Desktop app + region questions

I need to ask 2 things.

1st. Can you use desktop app without having any ereader? (I will be reading it on pc anyway so I don't see any reason why to buy ereader unless I absolutely must.)
(Also I'm running windows 7 if that matters.)

2nd. The prices in my region on some titles are ridiculous.
For example:
Konosuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!, Vol. 1 (light novel)
us: $7.99 :thumbsup:
Germany: €5,99 :2thumbsup
Other: $15.39 :wreck:
So my question is will shopping from different region using Paypal and not using VPN cause problems (since both the paypal and the IP will be from different region than I stated) or will it be fine?
(I did find this but it is pretty old so just want to make sure if it is still fine.)

(I get you can't probably give me 100% guarantee but there is a difference between "It is fine and there are no signs of it no being fine in the future." and "You will get banned (not sure if that is correct term but you get my point) and soon.".

Can anyone tell me how I can get epubs, not purchased from Kobo, on my Clara. The epubs download onto my Kobo app on my iphone but do not come up on my Clara,,,,,,I bought her specifically for that as I can no longer spend a long time reading on my iphone due to a bad spell of dry eye sydrome....

Please some help adding dictionaries

I used this guide: https://yingtongli.me/blog/2018/07/30/kobo-rego.html to set up my Clara HD to skip registration/sign in.

Downside is that since device never synced I never seemed to have installed any dictionaries. Currently on firmware 4.10.11655.

1. What would be the most painless method to get dictionaries

Not sure which one to use or in which order. Ex, would #2 work directly on my device without doing any of the steps in #1? Any direction appreciated.

Btw does anyone find the older english dictionaries useful for general purpose reading or are the entries dated?

New Kobo Clara HD arrived.

My new Kobo Clara HD arrived at the door an hour ago. The set-up with WiFi went flawlessly and now it's charging. So far everything looks great. I like the feel of the reader and the weight seems perfect, although I haven't tried putting it in the case yet. The Kobo H20-2 I bought last November is lovely, but heavy to pack around in a purse or backpack and I worry about damaging it. Those at least, are my (perfectly legitimate, right?) excuses for buying another e-reader!

What is the best way to replace all my calibre kepubs with kepubify ones?

Hi all,

After experiencing some big issues with page number displays on my kobo when reading kepubs, I tried using kepubify instead of calibre to convert an epub. Amazingly, it fixed my page number issue!

What I'd like to do now, is replace all my existing calibre converted kepubs (around 3000) with ones converted with kepubify.

Can anyone recommend a method that is as seamless and as automated as possible?

My first few attempts were not successful - I couldn't figure out how to batch convert and have the new kepubs replace the old ones - or at least, end up in the same folder as the epub.

Aura E2 Kobo still "frozen" after new image installed

Hi all,

My kobo has been dead. I'll describe the symptoms, steps I've tried to resolve it and what I did leading up to the freeze.

Symptoms:
1) When I hold the power button, the LED light comes on, then flashes and then goes off.
2) The backlight on the screen then comes on indefinitely.

What I tried:
1) Factory reset steps (no reaction from the Kobo)
2) Charging it for 12 hours+ straight
3) Getting a new SD card and installing a new image according to https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=311227

Things I did leading up:
1) I loaded the most recent firmware to the Kobo. The kobo worked perfectly fine with the new firmware. I could access it, I could connect to the Wi-Fi, I could download books from overdrive.

2) I stopped reading for awhile and left the Kobo sleeping. It reached a low battery state and I didn't charge it just yet.

3) After a week or two, I decided I wanted to use it again and plucked it into a charger, a few boxes appeared on the screen and it just froze. That's how it got "frozen", "bricked".

Now, the Kobo is extremely new, between steps unboxing and step 3 would have been 3 weeks at most.

I would appreciate any help or suggestions. I bought it in the US, but I won't be back in the US for some time, so sending it back in is going to be a hassle. Anybody has suggestions or similar experiences?

Aura E2 book organization woes on Kobo Aura

I just got my mother a Kobo Aura, thinking it might be a decent upgrade from her old Sony PRS-350. The Sony is not working well any more, though it might just need a new battery. Anyhow, what I (and she) liked about the Sony is that when copying books over from Calibre, it brought information along with. It automatically created collections for different genres and for different series. It's not looking like the Aura does this. I'm hoping though that I've just missed something and there's a way to sort/organize books on the Kobo Aura reader without having to manually put them into collections on the reader itself. If that's the case, I'm going to have to try and resurrect the old Sony. *fingers crossed for good tips*

Kobo system cannot recognize fonts added into system-wide fonts directory?

if you are really curious why I want to add fonts into system-wide directory why not just sideload those fonts, please check the context of that thread.

Using patch system, I successfully deleted several fonts in kobo system-wide fonts directory(/usr/local/Trolltech/QtEmbedded-4.6.2-arm/lib/fonts/), and they are no longer in the drop-list of changing-font in reading page.

But when I tried to add fonts into kobo system-wide fonts directory, the fonts I added are not in the drop-list(BTW, the fonts I added are working fine when sideloaded), so I did a little trick, add the following line to the end of the shell script which removes the fonts to list all fonts in /usr/local/Trolltech/QtEmbedded-4.6.2-arm/lib/fonts/ and print the list into `nickel home` directory:

ls usr/local/Trolltech/QtEmbedded-4.6.2-arm/lib/fonts/* > /mnt/onboard/fonts-list

So I check the list in fonts-list when I connect my Kobo to PC. And the fonts I added are exactly all in the list(as expected, the fonts I deleted are not in the list). It means I did add them into usr/local/Trolltech/QtEmbedded-4.6.2-arm/lib/fonts/ but Kobo cannot recognize them when I want to change fonts when I'm reading. Why is that?

And I notice another thing, when I extract the kobo firmware zip file and try to open *ANY* font in the kobo-update-4.11.12019\KoboRoot\usr\local\Trolltech\QtEmbedded-4.6.2-arm\lib\fonts, it failed to open it.

Double left-clicking it in Windows10, it says

"The requested file xxx is not a valid font file."

And I tried to open it using FontForge, it failed to open it too, it says:

"xxx is not a known format (or uses features of that format fontforge does not support, or is so badly corrupted as to be unreadable)."

That is so weird.:help:

Forms page turn buttons

I just got a Kobo Forma. Should the page turn buttons switch according to orientation? For instance when I turn it 90° shouldn't the next button always be the top button? On mine the next button is always the same and not changing according to orientation.

Forma Standalone Forma setup?

I'm trying to do a standalone Forma setup as I've done with every previous Kobo I've owned, but it isn't working like it used to. Does anyone have any insight? There are some extra columns in the User Table in Sqlite...

Every time I've tried it, the Forma comes up and says I've made a "Critical Error," and that I haven't synced any books yet. I can load an ePub via Calibre, but then it doesn't show up under My Books on the Forma...

I'm essentially illiterate when it comes to understanding these matters, but I've always gotten by for the memory expansion and standalone hacks just by reading the forums and parroting...

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be most grateful!

Broken screen?

Sadly, I dropped my Kobo Aura H2O from the height of a lounge chair. It fell onto the wooden leg of the chair. After the fall, the screen was frozen on the page I had been reading. Nothing looked amiss, until I started pushing the power button repeatedly. After that black vertical lines appeared on the right side of the screen. More frantic pushing of the screen and power button resulted in two blank boxes. The usual trouble shooting has not worked. The only odd thing I can see is a bit of a wonky line at the bottom right of the screen. Or maybe I'm just imagining it? Is this a broken screen? I'm so sad! :(

New Calibre feature

The current Calibre release includes the following new feature:

“Kobo driver: Add an option to directly update metadata in the Kobo device database, instead of waiting for the Kobo to update the database after disconnecting. (Preferences->Plugins->Customize the Kobo device plugin)”

I am not experienced with Calibre and need a little help with this please. I just need to know which “Kobo device plugin” needs to be customised? I had a look through those Kobo plugins I have installed but cannot see anything that might refer to this new feature.

Clara HD Slippery Clara HD

So I've had my Kobo Clara HD for a couple of weeks now and I'm loving the small form factor and light weight. I'm going without a cover because I want something that will easily slip into a pocket and adding a cover would add half the weight again (at least) of the e-reader. I do find however that the back of the reader is quite slippery, especially in these dry winter months. Any good solutions for this? Maybe some kind of skin on the back or some kind of grip tape? I'm looking for something that I could remove easily without having to worry about cleaning a bunch of gunk off the e-reader. Ideas?

Book covers not loading properly on Kobo Forma

I just bought a Kobo Forma and love it. I use Calibre to side load a lot of my books. The covers do not load properly on a lot of the books. They are either very small or not there at all. This is not a problem when loading them to my nook. I would really love a solution to this problem. Any thoughts?

Best case for H2O2

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for case recommendations for the H2O2. I want something that adds extra protection and is functional. The Kobo-made cases seem to focus more on the auto sleep/wake function and don't mention how much extra protection you get.

I dropped my first H2O2 without a cover on it from a small height and that was the end of it. I want to make sure my next case is better protected. Anything outside of protection is a welcome bonus.

I am located in Australia, so if you have local recommendations that would be even better. :)

PS. I tried the forum wide search, but didn't have much luck finding an existing thread. Do feel free to link me to one though, if I missed it. Cheers!

Aura HD Unable to Detect Any WiFi Networks

I'm looking for some help in getting my Aura HD to connect to WiFi.

I received my Aura HD as a gift back in 2014 and happily used it until recently. For some reason, the eReader no longer detects WiFi networks. I've tried connecting to three different networks (home, work, hotspot) but not a single network found. All of my other devices are able to detect these networks without a problem.

I contacted Kobo customer assistance, and they guided me through a factory reset. After that didn't work, they told me there was nothing more for them to do and that they couldn't help me any further.

I'm bummed because I'd really like to be able to use Pocket and borrow library books.

I've done some searches here on the forums but I haven't found any threads addressing this issue.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
