Clara HD Do you prefer EPUB or KEPUB?

$

For side loading ebooks on a Kobo, and using Calibre, do you convert to kepub? I saw that you only get reading stats with kepub, but you also get the book title at the top which takes up some valuable real estate. The latest firmware also has an ePub error at the top of the screen.

Pluses and minuses of each appreciated, and do you have a preference on which file type you use?

As you all probably know the Kobo Glo HD, although it didn't had a external SD card Slot it actualy had a sort of secret one inside it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7FuyPwc7Iw) so my question is: Have anyone had the chance to check if the Clara HD have the same kind of Scheme?

Thank you all that share answers.

Kobo aura problem need help

Hi Kobo people: I have a Kobo reader serial number +236770563819,bought Mar 11 which refused to connect to the computer or my Wi-Fi. It was working until the last upgrade version 4.9.11311. I I I Reset it and it still would not connect to the computer or my Wi-Fi. I tried upgrading it two or three times and it finally connect to the computer and I downloaded my books again. I live in an apartment complex where everyone has Wi-Fi. On this reader my Wi-Fi shows a weak signal and will not connect when I enter the password. WPS there's not function on my router. my neighbor's Wi-Fi all show stronger on my Kobo reader but actually my signal is stronger At -37dBn (Strogest neighbor is minus -39 dbm and shows are strong fan on my reader. the reader will connect to the Kobo store without any problem and upgrades automatically over Wi-Fi. is there any cure for this problem?

What's important in a memory card upgrade

$

So, I know that the standard 8GB in the Clara HD can hold thousands of books. Which is quite a few thousand more than I currently own/have.

However, if I were so inclined, what would I look for in a memory card to make the loading/reading of ebooks faster?

I see lots of benchmarks on micro SD cards, and they have basically 6 categories : sequential read, sequential write, 512K read, 512K write, and 4k read, and 4K write.

The small 4K read/write are always slower than sequential read/write. And I wonder, with a ePub that is maybe half a MB, would the 4K read/write be an important factor?

And does anyone know if the hardware in the Kobo devices will be limiting to take advantage of a $50 top-speed card?

Page numbers don't advance when using table of contents.

This has been a longstanding problem. When using page numbers for the entire book, if I click on the table of contents icon on the bottom menu and go to a different chapter in a book, the page number does not change or in some cases goes up or down only one or two pages. When reading sequentially or using the location slider, the numbering works just fine. If I have numbering set to the current chapter, that also works fine no matter how I navigate. I read all my books in kepub format and the behavior is the same for both books downloaded from Kobo directly or sideloaded from Calibre and occurs for all my books.

This is somewhat annoying, as I read a lot of non-fiction and often use the table of contents icon to go to the first page of the notes chapter to get an idea of how long the actual text is. Otherwise, I would never have noticed the problem, but it does occur no matter where I go using the TOC icon.

Any cures?

Hey everyone!

I have this few months old kobo aura h20 edition 2 and it doesn't hold the charge. I will charge it about -50%, and the next day it's empty.

My kobo aura used to last me for weeks on sleep. This one doesn't even last 24h. Is this normal?

Refurbished Kobo Aura $50, Touch (original) $25

I don't know if these are good deals or not, but Kobo is selling refurbished Kobo Glo HDs ($90), Auras ($50) and the Original Touch ($25) on their eBay store. Supposedly factory refurbished with 1 year warranties. (Shipping is $7, so that needs to be added as well.)

Aura ONE folders for books I don't want to be in the kobo library?

$

I ordered a Aura One & it is expected that it will arrive next week or so. Have downloaded the koboutilities & a kiddy pdf guide on how to install koreader as well as the kobo user guide.

Now I have some "books" (light novels) that I do not want to be part of the kobo library since they are still unfinished as the volumes continue to grow as the translators have time. On my tablets, I created folders for the light novels & add to it as new volumes occur. Moon+Reader Pro is able to access & read the files/books directly. The ipad suck big time doing something like that as the ipad is a kiddy sandbox. I also have some reference manuals/user manuals in another folder & is updated/downdated as gadgets occur/tossed.

Looking at the Kobo user manual, I do not see any references to a "files manager" or folder creations. I do not want to be depended on a "cloud" like with the ipad 2017 which I got rid of recently. The doctor's office do not have wifi for me to use nor does the dental office nor the car dealer in the waiting room. Heck no public wifi when waiting to get a hair cut. I do not have a dumb smartphone so cannot use that for reading.

Is there any 3rd party file management app for the kobo aura one to use? Or is/are reader apps locked into reading from the aura one device library? My ancient Nook 1st edition allows the user to add books to a "personal" library folder! It is strange that the Kobo user guide does not mention something about users' preferences for book locations. Yes, I am very new to Kobo & have been reading lots but not see anything about books in personal folders & its access in the "tips & tricks". I think that it is a non-issue but very important & should be addressed somewhere!

Reading stats on Kobo Aura H20 Edition 2

Hi!

I have been looking for a way to access my reading stats from my book. Everywhere I look online, (videos of review, tutorial or kobo website), it shows that you can access it through the bottom of the screen with the little lines icon. I don't have that icon. I'm looking for the stats showing how much time left in your chapter, book, etc Nowhere to be seen!

Does anyone know?

Clara HD Sending epubs wirelessly??

$

I just bought a Clara HD. I changed from Kindle because of Pocket integration and epub support.

BUT

I am just realising that there is no equivalent of Kindle's 'send via email' feature. I am gutted. I don't want to plug my device in to a PC everytime I want to use it. I also thought that adding epubs to the Kobo app on my phone might sync them to the device, but this doesn't work either.

I found the KoboCloud app, which should sync with a Dropbox folder (this would be PERFECT) but it doesn't seem to work anymore and hasn't been updated in 3 years.

What is the solution?? Am I missing something easy? Or a hack?

Kobo Clara HD

Just wanted to share some tidbits about my new Kobo Clara HD.

1) the back cover is hard plastic. This often gets knocked as one of the complaints about the device. But then, I've seen many of the Kobo back covers get knocked. The main issue with the Clara is that it has a strange stippling pattern for grip, but isn't that grippy, especially when your hands get sweaty.

Well, I found a solution. PlastiDip. If you have the cojones, take off the back cover, and lay down a couple coats of black Plastidip. PlastiDip usually peels right off things like clearcoat on cars, or metal wheels, but on a plastic cover it adheres very well. It gives the cover a nice rubbery, tactile feel.

2) The built in SD card is a Sandisk Edge 8GB.

I don't have crystaldiskMark, since I'm on a Mac, but I have a similar program. Here is the speed test results for the Clara.

It isn't that great.

I replaced it with a 32GB Samsung Evo Plus card, that has faster speed tests.

From off, the Kobo boots up faster now. I've got my eyes out to see what else might be faster too.

3) the battery is a 1500mah 2.8mm x 54mm x 83mm 3.7V lipo. So far it is getting great battery life, but it may be possible to actually fit a larger battery.

4) there is a woman who posted a great fix for the Clara HD. Search youtube for 'kobo clara fix'. She describes putting electrical tape on the sides of the screen. And I've heard from others that this works!... I was anticipating having to do this too, but I found that actually, if you just take off the back cover and press the backside of the screen against the front bezel, the side lighting disappears. It seems that the double sided tape there just needs a little more help. So, I don't even need to wrap my screen in electrical tape. Just one other possibility for those inclined to try to fix the issue.

Kobo desktop is a great advertisement for Calibre

I just bought (another) Kobo reader after killing my Aura trying to open it up after it corrupted itself. The registration process was awful, and Kobo online support was useless "uninstall, download again, disable your firewall and antivirus... oh, it still doesn't work? Buy a wifi router and use that"... thanks, great advice. Updating over wifi at work is what corrupted the firmware on my last device.

In the end I used an old hard drive from my old laptop, booted off that, ran the old desktop app (which automatically updated) and activated my device. Using Windows 7. Hooray. I was surprised that I could even boot off a USB hard drive... lucky!

Then the thing started syncing books I've already read to the device, then updating dictionaries... and cancelling didn't work. So I unplugged it and got the "you have set up your device" message. Which, amazingly, appears to be correct.

Now I can use Calibre and be happy. What an enormous PITA.

Kobo Glo infinitely stuck in restoring loop

Hi!

I'm getting the same thing that happened to the OP here:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=289156

The Glo just keeps "Restoring" over and over again indefinitely.

However unlike the OP:
1. Doing a factory reset (light button + power) just keeps me stuck in this loop
2. Connecting the device to USB also just resumes this loop without it showing up on the PC

Is there any other way to manually flash the firmware? Like putting it into some kind of recovery mode? Or any other possible fixes?

Thank you! :)

Hi everyone,

Firmware 4.9.11311 on Aura One

Has anyone else noticed with this firmware, and also on the previous 4.8 firmware, that when you click on "Footnote Preview" and then click on the Close button, the imprint of the Close button stays in the text and you have to page forward and back to get rid of it?

Kobo Aura Can't connect to PC

Hi,
I've got a Kobo Aura 2.0 and never had any issues with it. In preparation for going on holiday tomorrow I borrowed some ebooks from my library and wanted to transfer them to my Kobo via USB-cable from the computer.
When I plug in the USB-cable I get as normal the window "Computer detected" but I cannot click on anything - I've tried everywhere on the screen and nothing happens. When I unplug the cable again the window closes and the Kobo operates as normal.
I've restarted it, I've done a software update, restarted again but same problem happening everytime I try. I've tried different USB-cables, different USB-ports on my computer,... nothing helps.
Any suggestions what I can do?
Thanks,
Maria

Adding comments in Kobo eReader.conf file

Maybe a stupid question, but I don't recognise the language in the Kobo eReader.conf file and would like to add comments to it because I can't remember how some of the options work... Is it possible to add comments? Will comments need commenting out? With what character?

Thanks!

Opinion about landscape mode and other

I think a firmware update on the Kobo Aura One that will allow the landscape mode (horizontal reading) on kepub and epub books, would give a sharp increase in the selling of the device.

Another thing that seems strange in a so good device is that the touch area often doesn't correspond to the related button or word shown on the screen (it means that you touch something and do something else)

Who has two devices, and why?

Hey hi!

You might know if you've seen my other thread that I'm struggling with a brand new H2O v2 device that was an exchange with a previous device (same model) that was causing me trouble. Which has lead me to get a Clara HD to have both devices in hand and decide which I prefered.

Well now, I can't pick. I love the screen of my H2O. Also love the fact that it's waterproof for bath and beaches readings. But I can't deal with such a poor battery on the go. It will always need charging, which can't always be possible when you're travelling...
But I was used to owning an Aura for a few years and I am used to the 6" screen. So on the go, I think I prefer the Clara. The H2O does seem a bit heavy and large for travels and commuting (which I do a lot). The Clara just seems to be lighter and easier to carry around IMO, but I do love my big H2O screen when I'm home on my couch.

So now I truly can't pick. I either try to exchange my H2O for a third time and see if this time the battery will last (suggested by Kobo), or I keep the Clara Hd, or I keep both and just decide which I should use depending on the situation.

Who has two devices, which are they, and why do you have two? I feel a bit ridiculous for owning two such similar and new devices lol. :help:

Sync to gdrive!

$

This is something I badly hacked together to sync a folder on GDrive with my Kobo Clara HD. It should work on all other Kobo...

The attached archive contains the following files:

- ".drive/drive" is a command line utility I built from this (https://github.com/odeke-em/drive) github repository.
- ".drive/fbink" is the NiLuJe utility to print on eink devices. (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=299110)
- ".drive/sync_gdrive.sh" is the actual script I run to sync the "gdrive/EbookSync" folder on my kobo sdcard with the "EbookSync" folder on my gdrive
- ".drive/config.sh" is a file which can be modified to change the folders to be synced
- ".drive/ca-certificates.crt" taken from (https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/ca-certificates) contains the certificate authorities shipped with Mozilla's browser to allow SSL-based applications to check for the authenticity of SSL connections.
- the stuff in ".adds/kfmon/config" and in "00_hacks" is what I use to launch it with NiLuJe KFMON (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=274231)

Installation:

1) Create a "EbookSync" folder on your gdrive, set as readable from all those which have the link. This is the folder where you will put your ebooks to send them to the reader.

2) explode the archive on your kobo sdcard

3) to authorize the kobo on your gdrive you have to:
- go to "https://accounts.google.com/o/oauth2...2Fauth%2Fdrive"
- authorize your account
- copy the provided authorization code, and paste it into a new file on the .drive folder on your kobo, naming it "authcode.txt"

4) Lauch it. If you have kfmon installed you should be able to do it from the provided icon, otherwise you will have to hack your preferred launcher to start /mnt/onboard/.drive/sync_gdrive.sh On the first run it should create a gdrive folder on your kobo, with a .gd subfolder needed to authenticate the client on your GDrive.

After syncing the script will fake an USB connection / disconnection to force the kobo to update the library. You have to push the "connect" button or the new ebooks won't be added to the nickel catalog.

As of now, I arranged this for my needs, and I am short of time to maintain it. You can use it at your own risk. If it is of some interest I can upload it on github.

Sorry for the bad code and for the bad english, I am in a hurry :)

Hi,
I have a Clara HD, and I'm on firmware 4.9.11311

I tried editing my .kobo/kobo/Kobo eReader.conf

with the following lines added at the end

[FeatureSettings]
FullScreenReading=true
MyWords=true

However, when I go to Settings > Reading settings

There is no info on 'show header and footer' to enable full screen.

Also, when I highlight a word, there doesn't appear to be any way for me to add it to a list of words I've looked up.

Here is my complete file.

Also, of strange note... I have since finished another book since 'Ready Player One', but it still shows Ready Player One as the last book I've finished. Additionally, I changed my power off time to 30 minutes, and it still shows 60 minutes (which I had set it to earlier today). I also see that it is set to display a button to access 'Release Notes' for the current firmware, but the button is missing under Device Settings.

I have since turned off my device and turned it back on, but no effect. Is it not reading/syncing with this file?
