Desktop App Mac "Network Error" but I Have Net Access

On my primary (Admin) user account, I launch a fresh install of Kobo Desktop, click sign in, get error message
Network Error
Oops, something happening to your internet connection. Please check your connection and try again.
All my other apps can connect to the net fine. The iOS Kobo app I read with connects fine.

So I tested this with a fresh user account: installed Kobo from disk image and first launch I'm already signed in.

What lingering file or other mystery is preventing me from signing in on my primary, admin account?

What I've done:
  1. Searched here, found nothing
  2. Used CleanMyMac3 to delete all installations of ADE and Kobo. After this deletion I always empty my trash and reboot.
  3. I have tried reinstalling Kobo many times.
  4. I have tried reinstalling ADE first, with both 2.0 and 3.0 versions, and then reinstalling Kobo.

My setup:
Kobo Mac Desktop 4.4.6339
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13.1" early2015)
2.7 Ghz Intel Core i5
8 gb RAM 1867 Mhz DDR3, 500 gb Flash HD
Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1526 MB
MacOS Sierra 10.12.5

help with penelope OS X

I'm trying to convert a stardict to kobo dict, for what should be obvious reasons. I've got penelope installed, I have marisa installed. I have penelope 'working' in that I can type penelope and then a various command and it does something, i.e. penelope -h does generate a list of commands I can use.

However when I try and convert a stardict to kobo i get

Code:

penelope -i /Users/Glitch/Downloads/MalazanDict.zip -j stardict -f en -t en -p kobo -o mk-it

the stardict in question is from http://thefictionary.net/steven-erikson/ I'm using version 14 from this site.

A quick google indicates this may be an issue with an asci character, but I'm in the dark as to how to resolve it.

Any help would be appreciated, I want to learn how to do this since the dictionary in question will be updated at later dates as more books in the Malazan series are released.

Aura What does OD look like in KA1?

I really like the OD/Amazon experience. Sure, it's not integrated into the reader but it sure beats the old days of Nook with ADE, USB cable, etc. It's the number one reason I'm quite happy to stick with the Paperwhite.

Things I don't like are fonts and font sizes. Thing that is really, really, really bugging me is the 6 inch screen size. Especially when I'm reading non-fiction and it may be enough to push over to KA1.

I'm hesitant about the OD process away from Amazon though. I'm 99% in on OD e and audio books so the ease of borrowing library books is priority number one. So I have very specific and detailed questions about how an integrated OD works in the KA1?

From descriptions and videos, the emphasis is on logging in on an OD account and searching for books. But what if I don't want to search but just want to go straight to my OD account so I can borrow from the Hold and Loan sections? Basically, are you able to access your account and use its functionality like you would if you were in a browser or the OD app on the phone/tablet?

I have access to 3 OD libraries--my understanding is that I can use all of them but that I have to log in and out of them each time?

Touch Best firmware for Kobo Touch N905B prior to 3.17/3.18?

Hi,

I recently dug out my old Kobo Touch (N905B) and I immediately was confronted with the old problem it had when I put it aside for a tablet a few years ago: I could only update to a firmware around version 3.17 or 3.18, anything above that would crash my Touch after a minute or so, even after trying every possible way of resetting the device. And no difference trying the current firmware version (4.4.9349) now which is installed via the desktop software with the regular set up.

So, is there any consesus about what the most usable and stable version prior to 3.17/3.18 was? I don’t want to try out loads of old images just to find these or that annoying problems.

Thanks

Borrowing from Canadian public library directly on/to device

Can one borrow a Canadian public library e-book to a Kobo Glo HD device via Wi-Fi without using any other computer or electronic device?

I mean the whole borrowing process is initiated and completed on a Kobo device connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi.

Assuming that the library does have/lend e-books in Epub format.

Thanks!

My Glo HD is showing the cover image of the book I was reading (so he is in standby), but he won't wake up from standby. When I connect it to my Windows 10 PC it finds a SE Blank Megrez device... Is my Kobo bricked? I used the newest firmware (4.4.9344) and it was working fine until now. Sometimes I hat to long press the button to kill it and restart it.

Hi all,
just got an Aura one and I'm having issues with Adobe DE. Adobe DE states my device is authorized but I can't open the book on my aura one as that states it's not authorized. Should I deauthorize the device and then authorize it again to fix that? Thanks for any and all input

Aura Battery replacement for the original Aura (N514)

It's time for me to replace the battery on my Aura. After doing a lot of searching coming with almost nothing on how to remove the backing of the Aura or what type of battery is in the Aura, I ran across this Youtube video on a N514 teardown -

I went about it the same way and got access to the battery which is glued down.

Next I noted the model number of the battery (pr-285083) which I found out that it was the same battery that was in the Kobo GLO HD as well as the NOOK GlowLight Plus BNRV510. A few eBay sellers are selling the battery for less than $15 US Shipped. From the looks of the images included in the auctions, even the battery connector is the same so there shouldn't be any need for soldering.

Upgrade to Kobo Aura One from Kobo Aura H2O?

Hey guys..

I have been thinking a long time about getting the Kobo Aura One (due to screen size, which I really really like). I have the Kobo Aura H2O from 2-3 years ago but would like to maybe upgrade.

I have read previous threads on how Kobo Aura One was having issues with uneven lighting and other problems. This was a while back though.

How are the issues with the Aura One these days? Has anyone bought one recently and found it to be OK?

Also, anyone else owned a H2O and upgraded to the One? I would love some input please if you have. Just want to know if it really is worth the jump.

Thank you so much.

Firmare Update - 4.5.9587

As at least one person has noticed, Kobo has released firmware version 4.5.9587. This is mainly a bug fix release with few noticeable changes. It should be going to all devices except the Mini.

The release notes are:
Quote:

New in version 4.5:

This release includes a number of behind-the-scenes improvements designed to help you when things aren’t working as expected. Even though we put a lot of love into these updates, we hope you never have to benefit from them.

However, if you are having trouble with something, the best place to start is with our Help section. You can access it from the main menu on the upper left.

Happy reading!
And this is what Kobo posted to the beta list:
Quote:

4.5 focuses on "Content Delivery"

Raising confidence you have all of your books; providing education on syncing and providing troubleshooting for missing books
  • Added [Help > Troubleshooting missing books] section - Walks customer through syncing, confirming correct account ID, repairing, factory reset, contacting kobo.com/help, Customer Care)
  • Hotspot login improvements (especially in cases were you saw a blank hotspot login page, or a button or field could not be tapped)
  • Display Checkmark on Sync icon if sync completed within the last 5 minutes
  • In Sync menu, show number of books added (eg. ‘Sync complete. Added: 2 books.’)
  • If user has not synced in 60+ days, display 'Got time to Sync?' dialog with 'Later' and 'Sync now’ buttons
  • If user has synced using Kobo Desktop 3 times and has no saved Wi Fi networks, show 'Connect to Wi Fi' dialog with 'Later' and 'Add Wi Fi network’ buttons
  • Sync errors; inform user if sync failed due to network connectivity, or a problem with syncing
  • Added interstitial screen when signing out/factory resetting device
  • [Kobo Desktop] Some free books that did not have cover images were not appearing in My Books
  • [Kobo Desktop] Clearer sync messaging toast, and add a Cancel button

Fixed:
  • If a software update was found during automatic sync, user was not being asked whether to apply update now or later (update was applied immediately)
  • Light could remain on when device should be sleeping, causing battery to drain
  • On some devices, swiping to adjust brightness could only go down to 1%, instead of 0%
  • Repair wasn’t always prompting you to connect to Wi Fi
  • Repair could cause Known networks to be removed
  • In purchase path, Keyboard might have appeared when it shouldn’t
  • Authors view: ‘Recent’ sort was not always working
  • Authors view: Number of books sort was ordering lowest-to-highest

With that much more complete list, I have removed my short list.

The download links for sideloading will be added to https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kobo_Firmware_Releases soon. Or you can use http://geek1011.github.io/KoboStuff/kobofirmware.html to view them. (Note: The results can depend on your IP address).

Apart from the firmware version number, there are no changes that affect calibre. I have committed the change to bump the supported version. This should be included in the next calibre release. Until then, it is safe to use the "Attempt to support newer firmware versions" option in the KoboTouch and KoboTouchExtended drivers.

Message on ereader: download failed(but book works on ipad)

This has happened to two books I purchased and have recently tried to read on my Aura 2. Both are readable on ipad and show as readable on ereaders in the icon list in the kobo store.

The only thing odd about one of them is that it shows a blank cover in the kobo app. The other looks fine.

I can sideload via Calibre, but I'd rather not :p.

Anyone had this happen? I've had kobos since the original Touch and it's never happened with a purchased book that indicates it's readable on ereaders. It even tells me I don't have to download the book and can go directly through the ereader when I press the download buttons in the new library format.

Led lighting visible

Hi!

I bought the Kobo Aura H20 2nd Edition today.

This is my first reader and I am disappointed to see that the led lighting is quite visible along the lower righthand side of the screen, to be point of being a distraction. Is this normal? The reviews of the reader which I had read were full of praise for the quality of the screen and the lighting. The lighting on the lefthand side, the top and the bottom edges is perfectly uniform.

Is this a sufficiently serious problem to warrant bringing the reader back to the shop for an exchange?

Thanks for your advice!

Instructions for patching firmware 4.5.9587

See the Firmware update - 4.5.9587 discussion thread for information about what has changed in this firmware version.

See the Index to the Metazoa firmware patches thread for a description of what some of these patches do.

Before starting:

1. Check Settings > Device information to make sure your Kobo ereader is already running firmware version 4.5.9587 (c77383d7d1). If not, then you need to upgrade before applying this patch.

2. Check that your battery is well charged.

Patching from Windows, Linux (i386/x86_64), or Mac (OS X 10.8-10.9, i386/x86_64):

1. Download and extract patch_kobo_4059587.zip (attached).

2. Download the Kobo firmware archive version 4.5.9587 for your device (See this thread) and copy it into the 4.5.9587_source/ subdirectory that was created in step 1. (Don't unzip the firmware archive.)

3. Read and edit all the *.patch files in the 4.5.9587_source/ subdirectory in order to: choose which patches to enable (patch_enable=`yes`) or disable (patch_enable=`no`); and to change some of the replacement values to suit your device and preferences.

4. In Windows run 4.5.9587.bat (double-click); For Linux/Mac run 4.5.9587.sh (double-click, or right-click + run, or execute 4.5.9587.sh from the command line, or drag 4.5.9587.sh into Terminal, depending on your particular OS/desktop.)

5. If there were no errors, a new 4.5.9587_target/ subdirectory will be created. Copy the KoboRoot.tgz from this subdirectory to the .kobo directory on your ereader.

6. Safely eject and unplug the device, which will then update and restart.

To return your ereader to its original unpatched state:

1. Edit all the 4.5.9587_source/*.patch files to disable all patches (set patch_enable = `no` for every patch).

2. Repeat steps 4-6 of the procedure above.

Note that the following patches are enabled by default:

In librmsdk.so.1.0.0.patch:
`Fix page breaks bug`
`Default ePub monospace font (Courier)`

In libnickel.so.1.0.0.patch:
`Custom left & right margins`
`Custom page refresh options`
`Fix three KePub fullScreenReading bugs`
